What if the Argentine pilots had been able to make their bombs detonate reliably during the 1982 Falklands War?

In this episode, we examine one of the most important technical and tactical problems faced by the Argentine air forces during the Falklands War: bomb fuzing. Many Argentine bombs struck Royal Navy ships but failed to explode, largely because they were released at altitudes and speeds that did not always allow their fuzes to arm correctly.

We look at the mechanical and psychological factors behind these failed fuzings and explore a fascinating counterfactual: what might have happened if all 19 bombs that failed to explode on impact had detonated successfully? Could significantly heavier Royal Navy losses have changed the course or outcome of the Falklands War?

To investigate, we recreate the initial San Carlos landings scenario in DCS World and compare several different attack methods:

Argentine bombing tactics as historically conducted
Using heavy-calibre rockets instead of bombs
A pop-up manoeuvre before bomb release
Toss bombing from greater range

The results reveal some interesting possibilities for how Argentine pilots might have achieved a much greater effect against Royal Navy ships.

This is a DCS World military simulation and historical analysis of Falklands War air attacks, Argentine bombing tactics, bomb fuzing failures, and the Battle of San Carlos.

Topics covered: Falklands War 1982, Argentine Air Force, Argentine pilots, Royal Navy, San Carlos landings, naval air attacks, bomb fuzing, bombing tactics, DCS World, military history and counterfactual analysis.
