I finally caught up with Digger, and Tom Cruise’s ambitious satire left me with a lot to unpack. There’s tremendous filmmaking, a committed Cruise performance, and layers of commentary about power, climate change, and public apathy. But the humor and ideas didn’t consistently land for me.

In this review, I discuss what worked, what felt hollow, and why I’d recommend Digger to cinephiles more than casual moviegoers. Then I explore its polarizing reception, box office struggles, enormous budget, and what its performance actually says about the demand for original movies.

Did you see Digger? What did you think? If you skipped it, what kept you from buying a ticket?

I think that films like this are extremely important. Love it or hate it, this film has a lot to say, and says it in one of the boldest and loudest ways I've seen. That lack of subtlety might not work for everyone, but it left a pretty big impact on me, and I think we need more films that tackle subject matter like this with as strong a voice as this film does. I completely get people not liking the specific way this film explores it's messaging, it is VERY subversive and not the most accessible, but this is a film I think everyone should give a try. It's a high 8 to a low 9/10 for me, and I'm so glad we're getting a film that's as polarising as this, because it's made talking about it way more fun

They also addressed the narrative of commercial success in film: art brings people together, both audiences and the people who made it. How much did it make? Doesn't matter, the movie got made.

This movie was fucking amazing

I don’t want anyone to say people don’t go see original films for at least 2 years after Digger. 😂

10/10 for me. Loved it!!!!

I went into this hoping it would be as polarizing and ambitious as the reviews suggested and it didn’t disappoint. I fully understand why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s certainly mine.
Great video Sean!

Ten years from now people will rave about this movie. This movie was weird and funny. It’s very off kilter but it sticks with you and has a lot of thought provoking and interesting things to discuss afterwards. On top of that it’s beautiful to look at and the performances are magnificent across the board.

My favorite film maybe of all time. I haven’t stopped thinking about it 4 days later and I’m seeing it again tomorrow

I think the marketing failed this movie. I decided to go to it because resident evil was full and I LOVED IT! It spoke to me and made me think about very uncomfortable things. I saw the trailers and it looked like something I had no interest in at all. But when that twist hits, I was completely hooked! But I think it is inherently impossible to market a movie like this to reach its target audience because of the nature of the twist.

I think the film’s final message is the exact opposite of “you gotta learn to laugh”, I took it as: the rich and the powerful are financing art that makes us laugh to wash their hands of their crimes and distract us, and audience uses such art to wash their hands of their complicity on allowing such crimes to take place. In other words, the rich finance satire to make us complacent, to release our anger in places where it does not materially affect them.

A film of true cinematic proportions. Granted to us by the cinema gods for us to discover. A true masterpiece of the 21st century. Hallelujah!

I had a really fun time with it. It’s one of those movies where I really liked it, but I watched it and I can totally understand why someone would hate it. Tom’s performance in this movie is so much fun as well as the supporting cast and from the way the story structured it always kept me interested on where it’s going. But hey, that’s just me.

I loved it, and I usually hate movies about enviromentalism over how preachy they are. but this one just had so many layers of gut punches and humor

For some reason the guy in the thumbnail made me think Jeremy Clarkson was in the movie

I can’t take anybody’s criticism of this film serious when their major concern is that Digger had “nothing new to say” and it was “hallow”. Critics have been saying this about the film and yet they will congratulate every major Marvel movie about being a tremendous achievement when THOSE films are “hallow” and they always say the same thing every single time to the point that it’s a science for them.

Digger is in my top 5 movies of the year, and Cruise gives my favorite lead performance of the year!

I just loved all of the different layers this movie had and how engaging it was. There was so much to think about in what the movie was trying to say.

The speech scene was worth the price of admission. Great writing, great acting, great filmmaking!

@aidantodash1806 1 day ago

You can dismiss any criticism of this film by saying “that’s the point!”

I’m happy to live in a world where movies like Digger exist

I’m by no means a cinephile and none of my friends are either. We decided to see it and all of us loved it!

I really think the movie worked better on a second watch. You really notice so many new things that you didn't see, and the reveals aren't nearly as jarring as the first time.
