Source: My Life in Christ — St. John of Kronstadt.

Saint John of Kronstadt teaches that the deepest purpose of the Christian life is union with God. Sin separates the heart from its true life, while prayer, repentance, purity of heart, love, and the life of the Church continually draw the soul back toward Christ.

He urges us to watch the heart throughout our lives, learning what estranges us from God and what unites us to Him. For Saint John, this inner attention is the “science of all sciences,” because the entire Christian struggle is ultimately directed toward communion with the Lord.

Christian hope itself points toward this same destination: the grace of God, prayer, the sacraments, purification, and even the trials of life prepare the soul for eternal union with God.
