▶ Are there no jobs for Koreans because of foreigners? Is this true?
These days, people struggling with unemployment often utter the phrase, "There are no jobs for Koreans because of foreigners." Is this really true? The Sisa Planning Team visited the early morning job market in Sejong City and the Seoul metropolitan area. Day laborers encountered at numerous job agencies unanimously declared, "There are no jobs for Koreans because of foreigners." In particular, with the significant increase in Chinese workers on construction sites, some even cried out, "Koreans are being ostracized in Korea." Those who were unable to even find day labor due to foreigners lamented, "It's so hard to make a living... Something is wrong."
What is the actual situation at construction sites? At an apartment construction site in Sejong City. The team confirmed that about half of the construction workers gathered at the cafeteria at lunchtime were foreigners from China and Southeast Asia. This proves that the daily workers' claims are not false.
So, are they actually working legally? The bottom line is that a significant number are employed illegally. In fact, a crackdown by the Gwangju Regional Labor Office revealed that one in three local construction sites illegally employed foreigners.
▶ Areas with a High Dense Foreign Worker Population...Does Crime Rate Rise?
The reporting team also focused on the old downtown area of Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, where a surge in foreign workers has recently occurred. This area was the site of a bizarre murder case involving a Chinese national and ethnic Korean living in China three years ago, followed by another in December of last year by an illegal Chinese national and ethnic Korean living in China. This has led to a growing, albeit undesirable, xenophobia among some residents. Amidst growing public anxiety about security, police statistics have confirmed an upward trend in crime rates in areas with a high concentration of foreigners, including Suwon. This trend is particularly pronounced in the so-called "big five" crimes—murder, robbery, rape, theft, and violence—involving foreigners. This video examines the growing phenomenon of foreign workers encroaching on local jobs at construction sites, as well as the security issues in areas with high concentrations of foreign workers, such as Suwon.
