One rule that is easy to follow: shop for specific items as you need them (gap in wardrobe/makeup/homewares or replacing an item). Browsing leads to overconsumption.
Looking back, I miss having a school uniform so badly 😂 my parents were right when they said I someday would. Kinda want to pull a Steve Jobs and just wear the same outfit everyday!
I think you've hit the nail on the head in equating over-consumption with a lack of abundance. I read somewhere that one way to reduce unnecessary consumption was to have a hobby: the satisfaction of the hobby fills the emotional need previously filled by shopping.
What has really helped me in buying less, especially clothing, is to ensure to get and keep pieces that make me very happy and clothes I feel very good in! I have noticed that the reason I bought clothes in the past was that half of it was not suiting me really well and I was constantly looking for something better. Now I feel like I have nailed my style and I know better how to buy clothes that will suit me. And now I have only bought a couple pieces either to replace very worn out items or because my shape has changed slightly.
I loved that you didn't come up with a specif system to apply to everyone because that's not reasonable, instead you focused on sharing the tip that we have to BUILD a system for us
Hi Hanna! I have found that decluttering is pretty easy, but avoiding shopping is the hard part. I agree, you really have to have a solid plan for not bringing new items back into your home.❤
I’ve been a minimalist since I was a kid and long before it became a popular topic/ trend. I strongly believe I’m like this because my parents were severe consumers and having all the stuff in the house drove me crazy that it made me be the complete opposite of that.
One strategy I have, especially with jewelry, is reminding myself that I already have a favorite that I wear every single day and never take off and I am way too lazy to alternate. If I already have a favorite and it never even comes off my body, then what is the point of buying another item?
Been working on minimalism for years and I’m still working on the wardrobe part. I’m just so indecisive with clothes. I enjoy your videos and you’ve helped me a lot.
I kon marie Dover 8 years ago It’s a constant thing No buys help .using what you have . I feel every 6-12 months evaluate what you are truly using I have less but am so much happier and organized. I used containers and drawers to make try to fit everything into an area Laundry its important .i do it weekly with enough workout clothes , pjs , underwear etc to get me through 7-14 days
I love the part where you equate overconsumption to the feeling of lack or not having enough … I had never thought of it that way and yet I immediately understood it. I have always been surrounded by people who constantly craved things and from childhood I shrunk away from it as a result. It is only now that I am considerably older I recognize that my fewer possessions still bring me so much more happiness and joy because they make me feel satisfied - filled rather than empty. I always have enough! … I love that you are still sharing your perspective because I appreciate it!
I looove how you pointed out that there are many beautiful things out there. Many people just say you don't need this, be mindful when shopping, but I feel my insides wanting to stop listening when they don't acknowledge all the exciting new things the market has to offer!! Makes me a bit sad, so I'm glad you touched on it :))
My one rule is being extremely picky about new things. I try to find most durable, well made and sustainable option. Receiving gifts is very hard for me because you lose that control over what enters your life. Altering clothing by myself also prevented me from replacing items that I can fix.
