あの地区は、JRの笹原駅、西鉄の井尻駅共に、乗降客数とてつもなく多いのに、いずれも普通電車停車のみという不遇の扱いを受けている地域だったので。
田沢湖線/秋田新幹線やほくほく線などにも駅間に退避設備があるところがありますね。
特にほくほく線はトンネル内に退避設備があるため、降雪時におけるパンタグラフへの着雪を防げるというメリットが挙げられるでしょう。
