Haunted houses are one of my favorite tropes in horror 🥰

Sinead, I truly appreciate you mentioning trigger of animal deaths. That’s my NOPE, I’m not reading that, and I truly appreciate you noting that others have this trigger too. Thank you

My friend and I have wonderful discussions about books and the other day we talked about The Haunting of Hill House. He mentioned something that has stuck with me “you know why I don’t like some haunted house books? It’s because the house isn’t the main character. In Haunting of Hill House it is the main character and it looms over the other characters.”
I just thought that was a great explanation of that book

For me, Jackson never wrote straight horror. She wrote women driven to the edge of despair, which she understood completely. That happens to manifest as horror

I so appreciate you giving a warning about animal death. That’s such a trigger warning for me.

The Changeling. You want a haunted house story. The Changeling. Best ghost/mystery/haunted house movie ever.

The September House will gaslight you toward the end where you actually start believing Margret is an unreliable narrator, it's so masterfully written! I love it

I would recommend 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' by Shirley Jackson! Not exactly a haunted house book, but has definite elements of a creepy house where you are not sure what is going on!

I couldn't believe that The September House was a debut novel! Masterfully written. I agree about so many of these!

I just finished reading "The House of the Seven Gables" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Wonderful, and not what I expected at all. I'm a Massachusetts native and am always intrigued by novels set here. This book illustrates how houses may seem to be cursed and haunted, but it's usually people who are "haunted".

Loved ‘The Haunting of Hill House’. So eerily unnerving.

I so so appreciate that you mention pet deaths. I just can’t do pet deaths so I am always looking for warnings

I just finished Sarah Waters The Little Stranger and I absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down. Very unsettling read.

How to Sell a Haunted House was so much better than I expected.

The Little Stranger freaked me out. The parallels with a house and family I knew as a child are so strong, I actually caught myself thinking things like, "Hang on, that's not how you get to the drawing room from the library...".

Hell House? Absolutely. A riff on Hill House. Excellent. Have re-read it multiple times.

If you want a kids' haunted house book that is still scary upon rereading as an adult: The House on Hackman's Hill. It's got gothic horror, it's got ghosts (well. I say ghost...) It's wonderfully creepy. I read it as a kid in the 80s, and STILL love it as a 45 year old!

If someone tells you not to read something then you should by all means read it!

So glad to hear you mention Jane Eyre, read that book back when I was a teenager and it was the best book I ever read. So suspenseful and what was hiding in the attic was quite a shocker to me at the time. Also was a bit disturbed with the not so romantic relationship with Jane and Mr Rochester.
