BREAKING: Rockotar shares his unpopular opinions.

In other news, the sky is blue.

I like that they show Pocahontas taking her skin lightening makeup off, you hardly saw that the family medias. Most I can think of is here with Pocahontas and Mulan as well.

By kicking Smith off the roof in the opening of the film, Ratcliffe already made more of an impact in one scene than he did for the entirety of the original movie.

So basically what I'm getting from this is that Poco 1 is better visually, while Poco 2 is better with it's story

They should have never made a movie based on a real person in the first place especially since her life was robbed from her with kidnapping and sex trafficking, even her real name was taken away from her. I think if they kept it fictional and took inspiration from native culture, they could have made a much better story and characters. I know mostly all the Disney princesses come from original twisted dark stories of themselves but at least its just fiction that doesn't make you wonder why Disney thought making a happy version of true crime was a good idea.

Ah, back in the era when Disney released low-budget sequels that were released on DVD instead of coming to theaters (with the acceptation of a few). And yet, most of those sequels are probably better than the live-action remakes Disney has been shitting out nowadays.

"How Pocahontas 2 improved upon the original"
Well let's see... they took her out of the relationship with the man whom historically would've tried to groom her, and threw her into a relationship with the man who assaulted her, stole her voice, used her as leverage against her own people, put her on display, tried to convert her to his religion, beat her, and put her through so much turmoil and unhappiness that it likely contributed to her early death.. and portrayed him as her 'true love' ...

Um....I see why the Powhatan Nation will never let Disney touch Matoaka again with a 50 foot pole.

another fun fact is that Pocahontas’ tribe offered to work with disney on the first one to make it historically accurate and disney outright said no, Pocahontas also wasn’t even her real name (it’s ironic how I’m pretty sure disney has warnings before old movies stating that they are products of their time when situations like that could’ve been avoided in the first place if they just took the assistance they were offered)

That's because Ratcliffe's villainy changes from stinginess to pure menace with a darker aura to boot. Sequels do make returning villains more villainous than before which helps with plans of revenge like Lady Tremaine in Cinderella 3 A Twist In Time for example.

The history story I heard of Pocahontas was she was kidnapped by an English man to marry and died by disease shortly after arriving.

@vetarlittorf1807 11 months ago

I mean, it's still just as guilty of romanticizing a tragic historical figure. Perhaps even more so, considering Pocahontas' marriage to Rolfe was not a happy one.

Still, I do admit it's one of the better Disney sequels, such as Lion King 2, Aladdin 3, Little Mermaid 2 and Jungle Book 2.

Kinda also find it crazy the Sequel is more accurate the history more then the First.... (still mostly not accurate to what actually happened but still you get my point)

The two Johns trying to one up each other never gets old.

Actually Ratcliffe is named after a real person, the somewhat less villainous Governor John Radcliffe, but he was dead by the time this movie would've taken place. He was skinned alive by the Powhatan tribe in 1609.

I hope Disney can make more indigenous movies based on folklore rather than historical fiction, like Moana or Brother Bear which respected the culture and its people. Also, Happy indigenous Peoples Day! ❤️‍🔥🥰

Regardless of the overall quality of either Pocahontas movie, I think ONE thing everyone can agree on is that “Colors of the Wind” is definitely a banger and up there with the best songs from the Renaissance Era such as “Part of Your World”, “Be Our Guest”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “A Whole New World”, “Circle of Life”, “Hellfire”, “Go the Distance”, “Reflection”, “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” and “You’ll Be In My Heart”. Its message is definitely still relevant today and something our discriminatory and bigoted society could learn from.

probably because the bar was so low right

@pokemario6456 11 months ago

While I heavily disagree with Pocahontas 2 being better than the first (in fact, it's one of my least favorite of the DTV sequels), I admit that it's great to see Pocahontas actually come face-to-face with Radcliffe and the attempts to be more historically accurate. I still think it's stupid that Radcliffe managed to get of trouble so easily (he was already unpopular in the first movie and no way the guys coming back home to England with Smith would put in a good word for him) and that they had to make Smith far more arrogant and stupid just to make Rolfe look like a better option.

The few times sequels do better, I appreciate them so much because it shows the writers, authors, and people who aid in these projects' dedications and willingness to listen to the fanbase, as well as creating more off of the worldbuilding instead of rendering the original moot as most tend to do.

I was one of those people that did love Pocahontas one, but I do find it unfortunate how poorly they handled historical accuracy to an alarming degree.
