Today I am chemically removing all the paint and rust off this classic 1964 Morris Mini Cooper S prior to its complete restoration. I’m going to take you through the process we use to completely chemically strip cars down to bare metal. This is a more thorough alternative to sand/media blasting with no chances of metal warping on thin panels. This process shows you exactly what you are working with and gives you a blank canvis to work with!

It is a 3 step process

Step 1) alkaline degreaser and paint remover

Step 2) Food grade Rust removing acid

Step 3) Water based rust inhibitor

It's hilarious to see what Americans consider "rusty". That would be a DREAM shell to start from in the UK. It's in fantastic condition considering it's age. Lovely job stripping the paint. It really came out well. It's the only way to start restoring a car. You simply have to go back to metal. Great job!

Never failed to amaze how the mini came with its own free supply of rust, direct from the factory, cutting chunks out of early damaged cars for repair. Most box sections had zero corrosion protection. Later models, you might find some paint in there, and as we see on this one, the floors and sills would rot out so fast it was unreal, but the biggest killer was the subframes.

Reminds me of seeing them being painted at Longbridge UK when I was an Apprentice in the mid to late 1960's. They were painted mounted on a spindle that passed through the centre of the car body which is why there is a hole in the trunk back and where the instruments sit. It was then rotated along a line of tanks to degrease the bare metal and apply the first paint coats . The 360 degree rotation of the body as it moved inside the tanks allowed the paint to get into all the inside surfaces. Modern Electro paint does a better job but the body has to be designed for electro painting to allow paint to be get inside all the box sections.

It may be the smallest car you ever worked on, but it might also be one of the most fun to drive. Imagine a road legal go kart... they feel very much like a go kart, the way the steering feels, the suspension (or lack of 🤣) and your butt is only inches above the road. I had a mini as my first car. Happy memories! Zero crash safety though!

You just did, in less than a week, what it took my eldest sibling, a heap of his mates, and his little sister (me) more than a year to achieve in the garage at home, fifty years ago. For a 64 MkII Cooper S, that shell is in pretty good nick - now all it needs is another three or four years of restoration work, to be an actual drivable vehicle again. Hope whoever owns it keeps it genuine. She’d be worth a mint to some of us.

For 60 yrs of age .. I amazed at how little rust there was. Sure it was bad in a few spots but overall amazing shape for the age.

The round hole in the dash was for the speedometer. But in the factory it was used for a jig to aid manufacture - there’s another hole in the back, and the jig was a large tube fed through both holes as a rotisserie so the body shell could be spun over and spot welded, sub frames and suspension etc fitted. The Mini Cooper S was the first car I did 100mph in, on the A40 in Oxfordshire.

Very interesting, I heard a story that a mini body was carried out of the Longbridge factory Birmingham by a couple of chaps in the 60’s
They told the security geysers they were taking it to the Apprentice Train School. But took it home and made a mini out of parts nicked ov.er time from the factory. Cheers Mike in England

I worked on so many of these minis in the 90s. Actually Austin's in general. Always welding the sills (rockers) to get them through MOTs.

When I was in HS. After school let out, I had a part time job. It was a small janitorial company. I packed cut and cleaned rags. One day the owner had purchased two mini coopers. And he wanted them inside the building. Only issue was the floor of the building was about 5’+ below grade. With wood ramps , a fork lift ,and rope we got em in. I asked the owner why did he buy them. With enthusiasm he said I’m going to restore them. For 11th & 12th and summer full time those cars weren’t touched.
