What really happened to Suzy Lamplugh?

Baker Street Bureau

There are so many police failures all over this case it's insane.
Not treating Suzy Lamplugh as a victim stopped them from looking deeper into the picture which would have revealed the potential killer, right under their noses.

A very famous case that refuses to go away because of the legacy it left behind.
Suzy Lamplugh's disappearance changed the way we approached working alone and being with strangers even in environments that are SUPPOSED to be safe ones.
It also helped push forwards protection from people that are dealing with stalkers.

I met her Mum in 1991. She was determined to make a difference and founded the Missing Persons Helpline woth her friend.

Female real estate workers have always been at risk. I worked as one in the early 70s, but never went to a showing with a man alone. If I made a sale, it meant sharing the fee, but it was worth it.

John Cannan. Played games from the outset and convicted of a similar abduction and the killing of Shirley Banks. Womaniser, confident but hugely dangerous. Died recently taking the truth to the grave. I wouldn’t be surprised if Suzy’s remains were missed by police when the Grand Union Canal was searched at the Brentford stretch. RIP.

I always remember the Suzy Lamplugh case; it was the one that made me aware of how unsafe it is to be a woman meeting a man you don't know alone. The vast majority of time it's fine, right until it isn't and you don't know when that time will come. Perhaps the increased awareness of lone working safety is a good thing that has come of this, but I wish it hadn't come at the cost of her innocent life. She was just doing her job.

Meeting a Mr Kipper, sounds a bit fishy.......

@Saternalius 3 months ago

Funny you should say that the name Kipper sounds like something from a detective story. A kipper is a smoked herring, and a false clue in a detective story is often called a Red Herring.

I was a young single woman living in London at the time so I remember this case well.

Another great video. You did, however, fail to mention a very important thing about John Cannon. His nickname in prison was Kipper as he was known for always falling asleep. To me this is a huge clue.

He may have convinced her to give him a lift to another property. Perhaps he told her he had one to sell and he'd give her the commission? Who knows? Evil pig.
Poor girl 😔

Can you investigate Janice Weston? It's Cambridgeshire's longest unsolved murder...

@jimsimpson1006 2 months ago

Both her parents passed away without ever knowing what happened to her. I just can't imagine how heartbreaking that would be.

Remember the lorry driver who has since passed who was 100% certain he saw Cannon throw a very large suitcase into a canal etc in Brentford. The Guy was so certain he went to the trial I gather of that evil Cannon. Police say they had searched that canal after and found nothing. Considering that Police Divers have missed bodies before I suggest they go back and redo properly.

Weirdly my hairdresser in the late 80s/early 90s was called Suzy Lamplugh and she then married a man called Jim Dando

I absolutely love your style on creating content.
A breath of fresh air to a case that has perturbed many for too long.

the thing with Cannon is, he was already a criminal that had been detected and caught for a previous crime, so was a failure at getting away with it; then later, after the Lamplugh event, he failed to avoid detection and was caught for another crime. If he was responsible for Suzy's disappearance, was it just 'luck' he got away with it ? If he had worked this one out, he didn't have the skill to avoid detection for his later crime.
