Your "Always On" philosophy makes me smile, because the second thing I was taught in school was to shut everything off and to norm all the controls. At any event, electricity in The Netherlands is expensive enough that am conscious of the cost.

LOL my hybrid studio set up goal is basically a small vocal channel strip and outboard rack for mastering.

Entertaining way to present your ideas. Thank you for uploading. Cheers, Rolf

My Avid Carbon has been serving me well for four years. That's all I really use now in the studio.

Always on! Yes

Love that studio!

So, I'm building/built a hybrid studio and there is something that people who talk about hybrid studios don't seem to bring up, and that is trying to take advantage of input digital effect/dynamic preprocessing (compressors, mic pre amp emulator plugins, etc) available to you with a high end interface (such as the galaxy 32 which is what I have) plus using an outboard analog mixer while tracking.  Trying to do both essentially halves the number of input channels that you actually have available to you.  For me, that has been the biggest financial pill to swallow given the $6k price of the galaxy 32.  You have your instrument/mics that have to go through your interface to apply the pre-mixer effects/pre-processing on the interface (say inputs 1-16), which can then go through the AFX plugins of your choice.  Those pre-processed signals can then be fed into the analog mixer via outs 1-16.  Now if you want to record those channels post mixer via direct outs, you have to use inputs 17-32 on the galaxy to get the sound into your DAW.  When mixing or mastering you would have all 32 outs and all 32 ins available to you with a little patching.  It took me awhile to realize this...  Obviously if you forgo the AFX on the galaxy 32 for pre-processing or record prior to passing the signal through the analog mixer, then you can take advantage of all 32 inputs either by having all 32 channel instruments go directly into the mixing board, have analog gear directly inline between the instrument/mic and the analog mixer, or recording all 32 inputs into the DAW prior to being sent to the mixer.  In the last case, you would get the warmth an feel of the mixer only during mixing rather than during tracking and mixing.  Kinda bummed me out when my head finally accepted that...

good presentation style.  best wishes

... and never, NEVER leave drinks, and food on the studio desk!!!! lol

I'm a hobbyist with some outboard analog gear. The single biggest pain point for me was recall. Eventually I watched or read a CLA interview where he basically said that pros have so much outboard because it's "set and forget". Each piece only does the one thing. Doing that definitely cuts down on the headache.

The second biggest pain point is cable management. Don't have a good fix for this, especially as I have a tendency to change things around.

Great job again Andrew.. saw some new gears in the rack like audipscape comp and warm pres. I hope reviews video coming soon.

Thank you, very informative and I appreciate your straightforward approach and explanation👍

Definitely, the more equipment you have, the more logistics you'll have to work on, and yes, it can be daunting and a headache, to say the least.  The only upside is that it costs, so we aren't getting 10 things and then having no clue how to connect them all. Instead, everybody should start in-the-box, find their own limitations with that, if any at all, and consider adding something new, if and only if it is completely necessary for your workflow. If you get a mic, you probably also want a pre-amp for it, and the ball starts rolling. :D

Find your own workflow, as some musicians are totally in-the-box and work just fine, while others prefer a more analog approach, and thus the hybrid way is born. Not a single setup is the right or the wrong way. I know what I want and need for what I want to do, and if you still don't know, then it might be that you still don't need it. ;)

Great video, I think a NgLeveler would help a lot in the summing mixer with the automation

I’ve got a UAD Apollo, no need for a desk an I can use it without the computer switched on, if I need to practice, quality fx and inserts.

This is interesting.  I did more analog when starting 10 years ago.  Then went hybrid. Now I'm almost all digital.  I run a few outboard compression for certain buses and now that's it.  Digital has become scary good today.   For times sake and space I prefer the interface and computer route.  lol.  Also I am not doing huge mixes for labels either.  All my own stuff or local jingles for companies.  Whatever works.

Thank you for the video! I'm interested in learning more about what turned you away from the Apogee Symphony. I'm a Logic Pro user and have been looking for a "flagship" interface with a minimum of 32 ch of I/O.

Great insight 👍

Don't you use an Avalon VT 737 for vocals in your studio? I haven't seen any one or you hid it well, very nice setup in any case, I wish you every success ! Cheers from Geneva Switzerland :thanksdoc:

Great video, thanks a lot. Could you please tell me which loudspeaker/monitors you’re using? I saw first time that the bass speaker is at the side of box. Best regards, Chris
