The small electric car market has suddenly become one of the most competitive parts of the entire motor industry – and the new Škoda Epiq might just have moved the goalposts.

I first saw the Epiq when it was unveiled, but now it's time for the proper House of Cars road test. And after driving it, I think Škoda may have created something rather special.

Using the Volkswagen Group's new MEB+ architecture, the Epiq combines compact dimensions with the sort of practicality we've come to expect from Škoda. There's a huge 475-litre boot, up to around 273 miles of WLTP range, rapid DC charging, proper one-pedal driving and, in Epiq 55 form, more than 200hp.

But specifications only tell part of the story.

In this full review, I look at the Epiq's design, interior, technology, practicality, battery and charging performance before getting behind the wheel to find out how it rides, handles and performs in the real world.

And that's important, because I've recently driven some seriously impressive electric cars in this class, including the Renault 4 E-Tech and Kia EV2.

So has Škoda managed to beat them?
