What do you think is the harshest punishment that can be imposed on a person? For the vast majority, the first thing that comes to mind is death. But the Spartans didn't see it that way at all. Many states chose to execute those who acted cowardly. The Spartans, however, believed that death was too easy for some people. Because death ended everything in an instant. What they wanted was for a person to feel the consequences of their actions every day while they continued to live. They did such things that, for some people, even death seemed like a relief.

In this video, counting down from number 10 — the tresas, the formal permanent label of trembler that turned a coward into a living dead man, still breathing but erased from the community, the half-shaved beard that made his shame visible from across the street and impossible to hide, the gaudy patched cloak that turned a man into a walking joke in a society that prized austerity above almost everything, the marriage ban that cut off the coward's bloodline entirely, trapping him between a law that demanded he marry and a society that would never let him, the daily degradation of having to yield to everyone, give up his seat, step into the gutter, and endure being struck without the right to defend himself, the agoge, the brutal state training system that spent thirteen years teaching a Spartan to fear shame more than pain or death, the shield, the single object that meant everything, and the origin of the famous charge to come back with it or on it, the mothers who enforced the code more fiercely than anyone, valuing their sons' courage above their lives and turning away the ones who returned in disgrace, the krypteia, the darkest part of Sparta, in which young Spartans were sent out to terrorize and kill the enslaved helot population that made the whole system possible, and finally, number one: the true story of Aristodemos, the man who survived Thermopylae, and what happened to him, a story that reveals a system so total it would not let a man buy back his honor even by dying a hero's death.

This video treats the sources on Sparta honestly, separating the documented reality from the later Spartan myth, and asks whether the Spartan system was strength, or something much colder that only looked like it.
