In 1393, a medieval royal party ended in horrifying disaster. Known as the Ball of the Burning Men — the Bal des Ardents — the night saw highly flammable costumes catch fire and King Charles VI of France narrowly escape with his life.  But how did a royal masquerade become so deadly?

Kevin explores the extraordinary story of Charles VI, the troubled medieval King of France, whose bouts of mental illness led his court to increasingly extravagant entertainments. One of the most notorious was the Bal des Ardents, where six men — including the King himself — dressed as wild men in costumes made from linen, flax and highly flammable materials.

It’s a remarkable story of a troubled king, a drunken prince, dangerous medieval entertainment and a royal celebration that ended in tragedy.
