Thank you! This was actually my problem.  I was going mad. I was actually try to run like Usain Bolt on the board and my front leg did not want to pass under my chest. Thank you and greeting from Italy!

This video may be the best explanation I've ever heard regarding foot placement.  What a trap it is to not get the back foot far enough forward; I'd never made the connection that it results in a lack of space for the front foot to come forward and leaves the hips too high.  Fantastic illustration and advice.

As this is something that still gives me a problem on occasion, a cue I use is that once I'm in the cobra position, rather than just thinking about getting to my feet, focus on dragging the knees forward.  That will result in the back foot getting farther forward and more room for the front foot.  It all happens much quicker than it sounds from my description.

Thanks again Ben.

Best pop up video I’ve ever watched. And I’ve watched A LOT of them!

Great video, by the way! 🙌 I just think it might be helpful to mention whether this is a longboard or shortboard pop-up.

This drill makes perfect sense on a longboard, but on a shorter board you can't place your back foot that far forward and your feet would be in the water during this movement. I think some beginners might get a bit confused if they don't know the difference.

Keep up the great work! 🤙

Awsome Lesson I have had a hip replacement this will help me get back into the surf at 77 years old

Best pop-up video I’ve ever seen. I’m tall with long legs and always struggle with my front foot during pop-up. This video solved the problem! Thanks

The pop up has always been my critical issue to surfing well, this vid has helped me understand why I look like a drunk giraffe doing my pop ups. So with practice I hope to be better and better - thank you Ben keep up the great work. 😊🤙

Getting the back foot further forward is definitely key to "walking up" the popup.  In fact, if you leave the back foot too far back and try to walk up, you'll find your weight on the tail raising the nose, making the front foot pull through almost impossible.  I do worry about having to immediately step back on the tail for the turn, but that's just theoretical at this point.   Very helpful video.

This video is an absolute gem! Exactly pointing out the issues I have with my current pop up 😅

Great video! I'm a MSK physio as well. I used to surf or at least try to try surf a lot. I'm talking years of going most weekends down the coast and spending a day trying to surf and having the same issues that you mentioned in your vid. I put it down to very deep acetabulum causing an FAI. I've even seen it on x-ray when a hip surgeon pointed it out to me. In saying that, I've never considered using my back leg to gain propulsion upwards to help give space for my front leg. So that was the back story. I moved one street back from the a few months ago, and yesterday I bought a new 9 foot softtop board. So I am going to give a proper go again. I'm looking forward to trying this technique. Thanks for the video!

Jup. 100% the best pop up video out there. No one goes through it like this.

Do you perhaps have some videos on how to get that back foot forward more?

As someone that hasn't surfed for 2 years due to hip issue. I have a new hip now and are ready to get back into surfing this is a really helpful video as I want to work on my pop up technique before hitting the water

I need this man. Thank you.  I dislocated my left shoulder a year ago and it’s just not healing right. I’m a goofy foot. And when I pop up, it puts tremendous pressure on my left shoulder.  I feel like all your tips here will really help when to work on flexibility plus that back foot move you are teaching.

I have to do a 3 phase - front knee to back foot into position then front foot.  Stocky guy with 2 newer hips

A LOT of great stuff! Please make a video about the importance of fixing an anterior pelvic tilt to slide the back and front foot underneath the upper body more effortlessly if you haven’t done so already. Cheers

Gidday Ben. Thanks for this. Ive followed your previous popup tip clips which have been very helpful and surf tested. 👍 Tried this clip tip in the lounge with emphasis
on getting the back foot sorted, feels great. Will surf test.🌊👌

Awesome!

Love the tip of getting the back foot further up the board! Keep up the great work, Ben!

I come back to this video because it is so fundamental to surfing stand-up surfboards. There is one more thing that can cause a problem with the walk-up method. If you place your front foot too far back and behind the centre of lift the front of the board follows you up. It's like having glue on your front foot and it's excentuated with shorter surfboards.

Great topic that only this channel has covered.
Note: if you don't turn your back foot and you are relying on it to assist, your knee will stop at your chest or elbow. It's like a trap you can't backout of and you can't get your front foot through because you can't rotate your hips. Your knee is inside your back elbow, traps all rotation.
People with less upper body strength or older people, get caught. Even people who have been surfing for decades. 😢
