If it's Avatar related, I'm here in a blink.

You should do a family therapy for Lin and Suyin, their rough sisterly relationship, and the falling out with their mother, Toph. Maybe touch on Su's kids while you're at it. Quite honestly, I half expected you to quote Bolin's "you don't have any siblings, fighting is part of the healing process" in this video

I stand by the fact that most of problems with The Legend of Korra come from it originally only supposed to be a 12-episode mini-series spin-off. Then it was hugely popular BECAUSE THEY DID A GREAT JOB!!!!

I think it’s worth mentioning that these two are professional athletes and martial artists, it’s no surprise that getting physical with each other is more the norm like Mako just picking Bolin up and carrying him when he’s in a noodle hangover.

While we're on a Korra roll, a villain therapy on Zaheer might be interesting.

Bolin is literally the type of guy that totalitarians look for in recruiting
Idealist to a fault, not good at seeing the big picture, disconnected from family and community (he DID grow up as an orphan) and desperate to fit in

"You a bad idea" is a such a sibling thing to say. Lol my sisters and I have talked to each other like that.

In Bolin's defense, he's not coming into Season 4 seeing Kuvira for the first time since she was a nobody background character like we are, he's been working for her for the last three years as she's slowly morphed into the villain she is now, it's been a long gradual process for him and he's trying to square the woman he's seen as virtuous this whole time with the actions that seem off to him.

23:00 Feels worth mentioning that Bolin is being actively manipulated. He's not a part of the intimidation racket, he's not there when Kuvira threatens people, hell! He's not even there when she fights bandits and recruits them in her army under threat of murder. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he didn't bumble his way into working for a dictator either.

What I appreciate about Bolin, is that when he realizes he was wrong. He does switch lanes. And I think that says a lot about the kind of person he is. He thought he was fighting for a good cause, and his heart was in the right place but once he realizes that Kovera is wrong he apologizes and he changes. He makes the right decision in the end. Because that is the kind of person he is.

One extra thing I just realized after watching this video is that the two do influence each other over time. Regarding their grandmother, almost as if it came full circle, Bolin did for his grandmother what Mako did for him by physically intervening and picking up his grandmother when she was being way too stubborn for her own good. Bonus points for Bolin for compromising enough to at least let his grandma take the picture of the Earth Queen with them.

One of the things I love about Korra is how well it models apologies. Their apologies aren't just lip service--they really do want to mend relationships and work towards being better people. It's just such a good thing for a kids' show to contain. Suggestion for future episode: Use film clips to show how to give a good apology (and what not to do.) Or if you've already done it, let me know.

I also really liked Jono's analysis of why Bolin works with Kuvira because I honestly find it mostly realistic. Leaders like Kuvira do literally divide families with their rhetoric and their policies, and Bolin, being a young man who grew up in poverty, is a prime target. I also personally know a lot of people (a lot of people who I would think too smart for it) who have gotten so wrapped up in a political idea that they fail to think critically about it. Granted, none of these people have as close to the people they support as Bolin is to Kuvira, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. I think it's a good reminder that all of us are susceptible to the Kuviras of the world.

But "funniest noise ever to come from someone's mouth" is a hot take when talking about a show that also include Bradley Dee Baker.

the editor deserves a raise for putting that sound on that particular scene. I haven't stopped laughing for 5 minutes, it just ECHOS in my head

8:24 i received an intervention. it made me aggressively take action in bettering myself in the middle of the intervention because it was a "your depression is worrying us" intervention and so my brain went "SCREW YOU I CANT HELP THIS oh wait i can oopsie hehe" and i then cried bc it was such a relief to have the weight lifted but also i felt bad i was mean towards the people who loved me and only wanted to help

You guys made this episode public very shortly after I had one of the more serious conflicts of my life with a family member. Your timing never fails to pleasantly surprise me with unsetllingly appropriate timing

@silvustheblue597 8 months ago

I just lost my best friend, my dog of 15 years, I have had the worst weekend of my life this past weekend, and I just wanna say thanks, seeing your new video made me smile and felt so good to hear both of your voices, and to talk about a brother brother makes me feel even more comfortable

One of my gripes with the show is that it never let Bolin grow past 'comic relief', which is such a shame because during the serious moments (for example in season 3 when he was protecting the others from lava) he was a really interesting character. Even Sokka who was peak comic relief had layers to him.

Another problem I had was how his abusive relationship with Eska in season 2 was played for laughs, that always felt icky to me. I'd love to see you guys cover that if you haven't already.

One of the things I enjoy most about Korra is this.
However, there's another angle to remember regarding Bolin when it comes to Season 4. In perspective, they had 3 entire years of the Earth Queen dead, and complete anarchy in the Kingdom. Similar to when the Germans had to deal with post WW1 depression because of paying out the ENTIRE war effort, the people were starved, and desperate, and hungry. When people live in chaos, they seek any form of reform and system to help bring order to the lawlessness.
For 3 years, nobody had the Avatar around to help keep balance. Mako joined the police but had a full case to be worked, and the lawlessness overtaking the Kingdom was a well known threat. Bolin swinging in the direction of "Any control over this hellscape is better than no control over this hellscape." makes a TON of sense for him. Yes he could have used Common Sense to know it was bad, but ask the Germans of their time if they too fell for the honeyed words of the ones in power promising a better future, and have the power to make it happen.
