In 1958, China declared sparrows enemies of the state and killed about a billion birds. Two years later, the country was struck by the largest famine in human history. Between 30 and 55 million people died.
Because of sparrows. Or rather, because of their absence.
Today, sparrows are disappearing again—quietly, unnoticed. In Europe, their numbers have decreased by 50-70% over the past 30 years. In some cities, by 90%.
This episode tells the full story of the most common bird outside your window. What a sparrow does for the city, why it's disappearing, and what can be done right now.
