In 1950, Soviet newspapers declared the Colorado potato beetle to be an American spy. Flyers, radio broadcasts, and school lessons—the entire propaganda machine was mobilized against a striped bug just one centimeter long. Seventy-five years have passed. The beetle hasn't read the flyers. It just keeps eating.
In this documentary, we explore the incredible true story of the world’s most resilient pest:
The Origin Mystery: Where the beetle actually came from (hint: it’s not Colorado) and the role of the Sierra Madre and Nebraska in its journey.
Cold War Sabotage: How the USSR turned a bug into an "American saboteur" and what really happened during that propaganda campaign.
Biological Warfare: Why crushing a beetle is a scientific mistake—the chemistry behind why it backfires.
The Ultimate Survivor: How it developed resistance to over 50 different pesticides—an absolute record in the animal kingdom.
Alien-like Abilities: From 3-year "sleep" cycles (diapause) to its uncanny ability to smell a potato field from miles away.
Global Conquest: Its current march through Siberia and China, and why Australia is one of the last places standing.
It’s in gardens across the globe right now, and it has been winning the war since 1949.
Documentaries about nature’s survivors, historical mysteries, and lost technology — on the "Planet Mysteries" channel every week.
