I think you all underestimate how useful this is to new players.  I have family who have never played a TTRPG.  I bought this and have been the DM for them.  So far they are having a lot of fun.  They are generally new to tabletop gaming but always wanted to do an RPG.  So the cards and layout have helped them by referring to it versus flipping through a player handbook.  I gave them one of my player handbooks so they can continue to learn about playing.  It is a carrot on a stick to get new players involved, which it has been great at doing.

I think an important thing to remember is that it is a STARTER set so it's kinda aimed at newer players, not that it's unusable for an experienced player but it's important to remember that it's not aimed for you, it's aimed for you when you first started dnd...

I loved the breakdown of these starter sets, I'd love to see ttt become a bit more generic nerd stuff rather than warhammer specific, I loved jenns st celestine sword build, I'd love to see you all make cosplays of your dnd characters and then larp some of your favourite moments from the campaigns, I know it's a big project but LET ME DREAM!!!!!!

came here to do algorithm things so hopefully youtube pumps this video and you all never have to get real jobs. keep living the dream. never let it die.

My son wanted to get into D&D and we bought him the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle box.  I ended up running it for him and his friends.  5e was easy to pick up for me since I have experience with the older editions of the game.  I made a lot of maps and created paper figures for the campaign.   It was a lot of fun and now we're playing through Dragon of Icespire Peak from the Essentials box.

There were lots of online resources and tips for DoSI too.  That was very helpful too.

The new started box has a lot of the extras that I make myself for games.  The maps, tokens, and cards make the new Starter Set very appealing to me.

It is based on B2: Keep on the Borderlands (1979) one of the greatest starter adventures from AD&D. It is heavily simplified (much smaller maps and keep) but keeps the open world from the original.

Teaching one of my player to DM for the first time, he said “ I had no idea what I didn’t know”

I really want to set this comment up a bit : I feel like the review's gripes were very much from someone that already plays DND and enjoys it; versus someone who is exploring the world of it for the first time.

The new set looks like a good bridge point for people coming over to D&D from board games. It's also nice seeing a classic (B2 Keep on the Borderlands) being remade for a modern audience. It's also nice that the box isn't half full of (semi)useless cardboard and air. Will every piece be useful for people who are going to go all in on D&D? Maybe not, but it still gives you a reasonable expectation of what a game can be, and is a great starting point for newer people coming into the game that don't know what to expect.

While not into DnD I love watching you guys branch out of warhammer.
You reviewing indie stuff like Marcher, Turnip28, or your own stuff is really great, as I get to see more cool minis and get inspiration!

That was really interesting!
The gamified side of the starter set is really good for new players I think. I only played two short campaigns of DnD and having to start by 3 hours of creating your character, with dozens of powers, stats you don't know what they're used for is really removing a lot of fun.
Having something to start quickly with lots of token to handle is really nice. You can always switch to more traditional way of handling once you're more familiar with all the system and you want to try something else

I kinda feel like the 2 styles are for 2 different audiences. Phendelver and Stormwrack were DM starter sets - quite good for someone looking to start DMing games - had some "homework" that is required before, but would be best with players who have a vague idea how the game works already.
So it succeeds in some respects, fails on the more broad scope of getting entirely new players into the game.

This new one does feel like a more complete starter for everyone - players and DMs alike.
But the new class boards format really does feel like it's pushing players into the D&D Beyond platform - I'm surprised it doesn't have (or at least you didn't mention) an pamphlet on how to get that app - and where to register for the plugins that go along with this campaign.
But it should also have included character sheets just for that pen and paper reference as well.

Short answer "yes" long answer "yessssessssssesssesssss"

Brought Magniscape up at my local game stores I visit and some people were already asking me where to buy it. I told them TTT game found. Hopefully they found their way. Good content as I have only done one quick combat session of D&D and this contained useful knowledge.

Here is to a successful Magniscape campaign!

The 3rd edition starter set was realistically packaged with the box being relatively thin.

I think that the gamification does seem like it would make it less intimidating for new players-for example, me-but I DO think you could outgrow it at a pretty rapid clip. Still, this was an interesting review, and the session y'all played was absolutely worth watching.

Appreciate shout out to other roleplaying systems at the end, would love reviews of more indie games from you as well.

Fantastic work more TTRPG games

that said!  I love all the new varied content and the NON-GW material thanks you all!

Such a helpful review! Thank you for taking the time to walk through the differences in the starter sets!

Glad I was in a position to support your projects again. Just pledged for the DM set of Magiscape. Pledger #61
