Quick Correction: Roger Maris won Back-To-Back MVPs in 1960 & 1961. NOT 1961 & 1962.

My sincerest apologies to everyone by that small error🙏🏼

Roger Maris is a personal hero of mine. He deserves to be in the HOF.

Roger Maris was a baseball icon. I was behind first base as an 11 year old fan when he hit 61. It was a thrilling moment. Yankee fan forever.

Roger was one steady/reliable player with good stats and a gold glove. Belongs in the HOF. And..... Yogi said he was a great teammate..... enough said!!!

He is a legend and should be in the hof

He should be in the HOF

Roger Maris should most definitely be in the Hall of Fame. He was very much unappreciated for the great player that he was especially as a defensive outfielder. Roger is a legend to any true Yankee fan. RIP Mr. Maris.

He’s a legend by every stretch of the word, even as a Mets fan you can’t deny the greatness of Roger Maris and it’s insane how disrespected and underrated he is when it comes to baseball history. I agree man’s should 100% be a HOFer.

This should be the year when Maris’s name would be enshrined in Cooperstown because of Aaron Judge’s achievement.   It took 60 years to beat.  Different science, treatment, nutrition etc...    What Maris and Mantle did that year, and Babe did earlier should be remembered as long as Baseball exists as profession for some very talented athletes.

Back to back MVP’s on a team that had Mantle ,Skowron , Boyer , Richardson,Howard nobody played in more World Series than Maris in the 60’s deserves HOF

LEGEND AND HERO!  Rodger Maris!

Thank you for this wonderful tribute to a deserving legend.  As a young baseball fan, I had the pleasure of watching my 1960 Pirates upset the mighty Yankees.  I idolized Clemente, Groat, Law and Face, but also greatly respected Ford, Berra, Mantle and Maris.

As the 1961 season unfolded, I was rooting for Mantle to break Ruth's record because he was the heir apparent to Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio.  When Mantle faded near the end of the season, I found myself rooting against Maris -- one of my greatest regrets as a baseball fan -- until the final few games.

Time has convinced me that Maris' quest was the greatest single season achievement in baseball history.  Here are my reasons:

1. When Ruth hit 60 homers, there was no pressure on him.  In fact, the expectation was that the record wouldn't stand for very long.  Ruth, who was in his prime, but also Foxx, Wilson, and Greenberg would come close to breaking it within a fairly short time.  The pressure, though, was clearly on Maris.

2. As a 1927 Yankee, Ruth got to avoid HOF starting pitchers Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock -- as well as Urban Shocker, whose career, although briefer, really exceeded theirs -- all of whom posted ERAs of 3.00 or less in 1927.  Ruth hit just one homer that year off of an all-time great, Lefty Grove.  Despite the AL expansion, I'd argue that Maris faced better veteran starting pitching overall, ducking HOFer Whitey Ford.   Roger hit 13 homers off expansion team pitchers, but most were veterans.  One, Dick Donovan, won 20 games the next year, and Johnny Klippstein pitched for another 6 of his 18 years after 1961.  Fans are free to discuss the outrageous baseball expansion since 1961 that benefited steroid cheaters as well as the growth of football and basketball which has lowered overall baseball talent levels.  Would today's NFL football have claimed Mantle?

3.  Since Maris hit no homers in his first ten games of the 1961 season, he actually hit his 61 homers in fewer than 154 games!  Who's to say it had to be the first 154, Ford Frick aside?  Do we care when DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak occurred?

4. Maris' record has stood much longer than Ruth's.  Steroid cheaters shouldn't count in the mind of any serious baseball fan, albeit Maris held the record longer (37 years to 34 years) even if they are counted.  And unlike Ruth's 34 years of holding the record, no one seriously challenged Maris' record in those 37 years.

Roger merris is my favorite baseball player of all time he should be in the hall of fame

Roger has been my hero for 60 years.  Good video.

Roger was a true baseball hero. He was treated shabbily by the Yankees and MLB. His gallant effort to catch the Babe in game 154 in 1961 was epic. The HOF has become crowder with meaningless statistics and one dimensional players. Maris could do it all on a ball field and was a WINNER! He deserves a plaque in Cooperstown next to Mickey.

If Roger didn’t hurt his hand/wrist (right I believe) and the Yankees mishandling of that injury, who knows what might have been. From all accounts he was one heck of a defensive outfielder and all around player.

Thanks, great job very informative! Being a kid in the 60's and early 70's Roger Maris and Bill Freehan were probably two of my favorite players true legends, both should be HOF's!! RIP Roger and Bill.

R.I.P. ROGER  a true baseball legend

I collected Roger's 1958 Cleveland baseball (rookie card) . I also had Roger's  1959 Topps card with the KC Athletics.  When Roger came to the NYY in '60 , I was thrilled. I remember all the newspaper reports about the M&M Boys in '61. I always disliked the reporters who attacked Roger and his very presence on the NYY squad. I dislike reporters until this present day. I am a staunch supporter of Roger Maris for the HOF. I also belong to on line  the Rocky Colavito Fan Club. Rocky and Roger were roomies during the Cleveland years, and remained lifetime friends. Rocky and Roger for the HOF !!!!!

How can Harold Baines be in but not Roger Maris?
