I wish someone had told me this 10 years ago… here’s my best bass advice to save you from all the stupid mistakes I made.

And I’ll prove this advice is legit - by applying it to my GUITAR playing, which is way way worse than my bass playing. By the end, we’ll see if I can play better using what I taught you in the video after just two weeks of practice.

Because seriously, often the difference between making HUGE progress in a year, versus looking back and thinking “I don’t think I got any better?” is just the quality of the advice you’re following. Take the wrong tip about how long you’re supposed to practice, or what to practice, or how many basses you need (hint: one), and you can easily get derailed - which is what’s happened to my guitar playing.

My practice sessions go like:
1. Do major and pentatonic scales
2. Try to play something
3. Don’t know where the notes are on the fret board
4. Give up and repeat the next day

The sleep establishing motor skills is 100% a fact. Whenever I would try learning a song on piano or guitar, I would hammer away at it and feel like I’m not getting it right, and the next day I play it as if it were downloaded into my brain. Really fascinating stuff!

11. Don't forget to enjoy playing guitar.
When it stops being fun and the thought of spending more hours with a metronome and learning new scales makes you not want to pick up the guitar at all, remember that playing the guitar should be fun for you and a way to spend your time creatively.

Josh, beginner to badass is pretty far in my rear view mirror and I consider myself Low Intermediate now. I’ve bounced around from one YouTube teacher to the next since then, never quite finding the magic formula I experienced learning from beg to badass and feeling frustrated . Please, PLEASE create “Intermediate to Insane”.

I've been playing guitar as a hobby for 20 years and I'm not great either. So i decided to start playing bass, because why not be mediocre at 2 things! LOL

I hear a lot of people say they don't like playing scales. I actually love playing scales. I can honestly say watching bass Buzz videos has really helped me out

Playing songs all the way through is the most important! The enabler for this is finding other musicians to play with, also known as "joining a band".

Besides Josh's awesome course, I also use "no bass" or "bass backing track" videos to play along to and I definitely recommend using those. There are tons of them on YT for popular songs and for noodling around in different themes. What playing along to these tracks do, is give your ears CLEAR feedback on the parts of songs you can play along to and what you can't play along to, without the distraction of a bass track in the song that will sometimes mask or blend your playing with the band's bass player. Some of these vids even have tabs/notes and you can also make your own if you are motivated enough.

The most important thing is having friends who also play. That goes for pretty much every field of study. Community is a major part of why schools (uni/trade/etc) are so effective compared to their online counterparts. The environment can give you motivation when you can’t muster it up yourself. Bullshitting with peers can help unlock ideas/methods/solutions/etc bc that’s like the mental version of noodling.

Open-ended discovery! So in post-school environments, you have to create that intentionally bc it’s not given to you by default.

That point about saving noodling for the end really landed. It turns it from “messing about” into something intentional. Finishing a session feeling good makes you want to pick the instrument up again.

Thought provoking content. Josh’s pride in the Beginner to Badass bass course is totally justified. My own progress in the 3 weeks it took me to do my first lap of the course has been a revelation.
