To be fair, you have to have a very high level of cultural literacy to understand Martin Todd’s travel vlogs. The charm is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of post-corporate existential drift most of the moments will go straight over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Martin’s quiet rejection of the glass-and-steel purgatory of London, which is deftly woven into his on-screen persona – his personal outlook draws heavily from the lived experience of someone who looked at spreadsheets, sighed, and chose foreign countries instead. The fans understand this stuff; they have the perceptive capacity to truly appreciate the layers of these videos, to realise that they’re not just scenic – they say something understated about LIFE.
As a consequence, people who don’t “get” Martin Todd truly ARE missing the point. Of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the elegant humour of his Sims-style mosaic blurring, which functions both as a practical editing choice and a knowing ode to his amateur gaming career back home. I’m smiling right now just imagining one of those baffled viewers wondering why a suspiciously pixelated square appears, unaware that they are witnessing a deeply personal aesthetic callback.
Then there’s the man himself: disarmingly handsome, effortlessly charming, the sort of traveller who looks like he belongs wherever he happens to be standing. Yes, he’s also a great hockey player – fluid, committed, technically sound – though, if we’re being precise, maybe not quite as good as Matty. Still, Todd (or Toddy, or Murt, depending on the day and the audience) brings the same energy to the turf as he does to his travels: confident, relaxed, and faintly irritating in how easy he makes it look.
What fools, honestly, to scroll past. How I pity them. 😌
