Scorcese was reluctant to cast Nolte believing at 6' 210 he was too formidable to believably be worried by the 5'9 170 De Niro. Only when Nolte donned the glasses and demonstrated how he would play him weak was Scorcese convinced (he wanted Harrison Ford for the role - who declined saying he would only play Cady).
