Hello dear friends, in this episode of our "Where Are We?" video, we are once again following the footsteps of a dark figure who left his mark on a dark period in Turkey's history. As the great master Levent Kırca said, our intention is not to offend anyone, nor to place this here and that there. We will simply tell a human story to say that such a person lived in this world. Whether you like it or not, whether you love him or not, we are following the footsteps of a name that left its mark on an era, a name whose very existence is still a mystery today:
Mahmut Yıldırım, also known as Yeşil, and by other nicknames such as "Sakallı" (Bearded), "Hacı" (Pilgrim), "Terminator", Mehmet Kırmızı (Uncle), Metin Atmaca (Minister Atmaca), Hasan Tanrıkulu (Ahmet Demir), and others.
He entered our lives with a single photograph. With his scruffy beard and thin, long facial features, he became a name that dominated Türkiye's agenda. His real name was Mahmut Yıldırım.
Codenamed Yeşil (Green), he was one of the most prominent figures in the cold winds that JİTEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Unit) unleashed in Southeastern Turkey in the 1990s. He was said to be one of the shadows behind many unsolved murders committed during that period.
Initially an ordinary agent gathering intelligence for the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), he joined the Gendarmerie General Command with the establishment of JİTEM. Through his actions during this period, he secured a unique position within the deep state apparatus.
After 1994, he rejoined MİT and shifted his activities from Southeastern Turkey to Western Turkey. His connections to the Susurluk Gang were particularly widely discussed during this time. Mahmut Yıldırım, whose identity was revealed in a MİT report leaked to the press in 1996, disappeared following the Susurluk accident and the deep rift that formed within the deep state. Yeşil was a man of the state. He was one of the hitmen who served in the illegal structures created within the state. One of the reasons his name stood out so much was the sensational nature of his actions. Whether he's alive or dead is unknown, but if you're ready for this journey, and have your tea, coffee, or beer & salted peanuts ready, let's start our story from the very beginning, going to Bingöl and its Solhan district in 1951.
