As a Range Rover owner I can say this with confidence. Land Rover/Range rover for 78 years has been turning owners into mechanics. I do love mine and would not trade it for anything.

I live in Europe and our company specializes in repairing Euro 5 and Euro 6 catalytic converters for trucks, buses, tractors, and cars, although we mostly work on Euro 6 systems.

You will probably solve the NOx issue with the SCR replacement, but not necessarily for the reason you think. Your first guess with the customer was actually the correct one: contamination.

An SCR catalyst can have an uneven or ugly surface and still be perfectly fine — it simply degrades over time with use. Usually it becomes problematic when it gets clogged or contaminated.

Then the question is: what contaminated it? In most cases it is something engine-related, such as a bad injector, turbo, or even a faulty DPF.

As you can see, the color of the SCR was very bright and clean, so my guess would be the DPF — more specifically the insulation around the DPF, which can slowly degrade and clog the SCR. Unfortunately, you cannot be 100% certain from a borescope image alone. For a proper diagnosis, you need to open the SCR, inspect it and replace the core if necessary (this is where our company comes into the picture).

So, basically DEF is just piss water.  lol

Dave, something I learned in 1972.  Keep my work area in 'Dying order'.  (That was a company motto.)  If I died, EVERYTHING was in order.  I use that to this day.  It matters.

Just a heads up for next time there is a drain tube on the right rear corner of the DEF tank it’s clipped in and can be pulled out and drained easily just to save you guys time next time I ran into the same issue!

The lesson to learn is dont buy a Ranger Rover!!
