The deal was as good as done. In September 1970 Preston's star Scottish midfielder Archie Gemmill was all set to join League Champions Everton, whose 'Holy Trinity' midfield of Alan Ball, Howard Kendall and Colin Harvey was already English football's most celebrated combination. What's more, Ball's dad - Alan Ball Snr - was Preston's manager and had agreed the transfer with Everton boss Harry Catterick. But they didn't count on the persistence of Derby County manager Brian Clough.

In this interview Archie recalls how Clough simply refused to leave his home until he signed the transfer papers - even kipping down overnight!

Archie became one of Clough's finest signings and here recounts his life in football, growing up in Paisley, his two spells with the Rams and a total of 324 appearances for the club... and of course that famous goal he scored for Scotland against Holland in the 1978 World Cup.
