At 67 and just learning to sew, I see the word “pattern” and think 😰. I don’t even know where to begin learning the very basics. Thank you for this inspiration, however. You’re so right: NOTHING about making a pillowcase or scrunchie inspires me. I know they’re just stepping stones to the “real” thing, but I get bored so easily. 😢

The first piece of clothing I sewed was my wedding dress.

I’m the kind of nerd who was scared of their sewing machine so my initial projects included - by hand - simple garments from the 18th century, though so long as I had both a guide to sewing and hand sewing and instructions, they weren’t difficult. I even sewed a set of regency long stays by hand before I’d mastered my sewing machine.

Most things are achievable; it’s definitely a good idea to get some cheap fabric and zips and practise things like zips and buttonholes and take it really slowly. Great British Sewing Bee books are good and a vogue sewing manual (I have a vintage one and it’s brilliant - got it off Etsy) or even the DK ones and one thing you absolutely do need is some kind of book that clearly covers all kinds of body alterations for patterns. I’ve had to do this from the start of my sewing journey because of my stupid body.

One thing I’ve been leery of trying has been jersey sewing, but I do have a really good book and chapters, plus the right kind of needles.

Also - the right thread and needle for fabric matters and using a poplin or twill woven fabric to start is a good idea as they’re pretty forgiving.

I am not a beginner and I love these patterns.   I have not seen a few of them before so that was wonderful.   Thanks so much for sharing your time.

I started sewing my own clothes about 2 years ago and made the Matchy Matchy Sewing Club Skipper top/dress as my first project, so easy and I got to learn a few techniques. I really recommend Matchy Matchy patterns for beginners and also for advanced sewists who want an easy and quick make. Other patterns I have from them is the Archer Worker pants, Open Back Smock top and the Pintuck Poet blouse.

I directly started with clothes. When I read another blog/article/comment about making pillowcases, I just closed it and made something for my daughter. I was like- she is a toddler, she does not care too much about clothes,,, it will end up super dirty soon and also too small for her another minute after. So I started like that. With some easier clothes with million mistakes for me. I would not change a thing about it anyway. 😊 thank you for the patterns, some of them are amazing for me too.
