This was a great video! Really appreciated the comparisons. I’m working on a scanner design for 8mm/16mm and I plan to use this design you followed as a reference point, I’m glad to see a great video talking about the process of using this. Keep up the great work scanning and keeping film alive!

amazing work, thanks for sharing

Great video. Thanks for all the references. One quick and dirty approach to frame jump is to write a Python program that looks at every image and detects a big black horizontal line and replace that image with the previous image.

Interesting!

this is so cool! :face-fuchsia-tongue-out:

Cool

Looks good buddy!

Nice video work about film. 👍I would need an extra lifetime to do what you are doing but I admire your work. 😊

I once went to a 100 crypt mausoleum that had living room furniture in it's glass enclosed and roofed interior space. There was a clean glass ashtray on the coffee table there. The thing that made it bizarre was the ever so faint smell of tobacco imbued corpses.

There's no doubt that the T-Scann results look better than the Kodak, and being the data geek that I am I would have gone for DNG (which is just the container/file format for RAW data, so they're the same thing as far as the capture data is concerned).  That said, having grown up with home movies in "Regular 8 mm" the Kodak results DO look more ....real?  Maybe that's what Kodak is going for with their white balance.    But back to being a data geek: having a pristine, neutral as possible, highest resolution as possible, lossless data source, you can spin down the "print" into whatever color balance, white balance, "feel" you want.    If people back in the 60s and 70s COULD have achieved color perfection in 4K for all their memories, they would have done it.  Intentional misrepresentation of colors to "warm" is just marketing to nostalgia.  You be you.  I'm new here and I love this video. Looking forward to more.

Wow awesome project mate!

Hahaha, I got into this the same way and ended up in the same place.  Up to this point I’ve been able to keep busy enough to avoid the question “what is wrong with me?”  Too bad our hobbies don’t pay proportional to the work we put in them.

good job

❤❤❤🎞🎞📽📽

PCB (Printed Circuit Board) board... It's the chai tea (tea tea) of electronics, lol.  Love the video. 👍

I don't know if you know this or not but bringing the backlit ground glass closer to the film will visually reduce film grain.
Because moving the backlight plane back turns it more and more into a point light source.

Awesome build and video!  I have built 3 Gugusse Rollers and have done most of the documentation for  their use.  I’d suggest using DaVinci Resolve for your post processing.  I think you’ll get a much more stable result.  I’d be glad to help you get started.  But as I said, beautiful build and video.  I’ve been waiting to see a good video about this scanner!

I know Torulf, he likes tinkering :)😃

This is a helpful addition to Torulf's site and work. I suspect that the frame jumping is partly due to the limitations having a 200 step stepper motor and a largish capstan. If for example the capstan is 5mm in diameter, it would advance the film almost 16 mm with one rotation. Divide that by 4.23 mm frame to frame. The works out to less than 53 steps across the entire height of the S8 frame, or close to 20 pixels per step. It is inherently going to jump around. I think the design is very good and quite clever, so I don't want to make it sound as a criticism of the design. There is plenty of design discussion on Kinograph, as well as the ALT-Scann sites.

Nice video, and nice woodwork!
