Why Did Jesus Say “Let the Dead Bury the Dead”?

Why did Jesus answer a request to bury a father with the words “Let the dead bury their dead”? Who are the dead who can still act, and what is the man being called to do?
We read Matthew 8:18–22 and Luke 9:57–62 in context, explore the distinction between physical and spiritual death, and examine competing explanations of the burial request without presenting an uncertain reconstruction as fact.
Luke continues beyond the familiar saying with a commission to proclaim the kingdom of God. That continuation helps us ask what following serves, before turning to a present-day reflection on responsibility, necessary waiting and the response we keep postponing. This is not an invitation to dismiss grief or neglect someone in our care.
