Why did Jesus remain on Earth for 40 days after the Resurrection instead of immediately returning to heaven?

The Resurrection was not the end of Jesus’ earthly appearances. According to Acts 1, the risen Jesus appeared to His disciples over a period of forty days, giving them convincing proofs that He was alive and teaching them about the Kingdom of God.

But why exactly 40 days?

In this biblical documentary, we explore what Jesus did during the 40 days after His Resurrection, who saw Him, what He taught His disciples, and why this period was essential before His Ascension.

We examine the resurrection appearances of Jesus recorded in Matthew, Luke, John, Acts, and 1 Corinthians — including His appearances to Mary Magdalene, the disciples, Thomas, Peter, the travelers on the road to Emmaus, and the larger group of believers mentioned by Paul.

Why did Jesus allow Thomas to examine His wounds? Why did He meet Peter again after Peter’s denial? Why did He eat with His disciples after rising from the dead? Why did He command them to wait in Jerusalem? And what did He teach them about the Kingdom of God before leaving?

We also explore the biblical significance of the number 40, appearing throughout Scripture in the stories of Moses, Israel, Elijah, and Jesus Himself.

Finally, we follow the risen Christ to the Ascension, when He commissioned His followers to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth and promised the coming of the Holy Spirit.

From the empty tomb to the Mount of Olives, this is the story of Jesus’ 40 days after the Resurrection — and why He remained on Earth before ascending to heaven.
