One in three people over 65 has a fall every year, but falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. In this episode, two NHS falls specialists explain what puts people at risk, the balance and strength exercises with the strongest evidence behind them, and exactly what to do if you ever find yourself on the floor.
James is joined by Meghan and Annie from the Falls Assessment and Education Service in Gloucestershire. They talk through the fear-of-falling cycle and how to break it, the Otago exercise programme, why three times a week is the number that matters, the right and wrong way to help someone up after a fall, and why the people with log burners might be onto something.
This episode is released during Falls Prevention Awareness Week, 21st to 25th September 2026. Jim's Gym is supporting Fall-Proof, a Gloucestershire-wide campaign helping older adults stay strong, steady and confident through strength and balance activities.
