*Pig leather and kiwis were used as representations during testing, and should not be considered anatomically correct. Only one brand of blanks was used per cartridge and may not accurately represent the results of all blanks available for a given cartridge.

In 1984, actor Jon-Erik Hexum was filming the TV series Cover Up when, during a delay on set, he jokingly placed a .44 Magnum revolver loaded with a blank cartridge against his right temple and pulled the trigger. Although there was no conventional bullet, the blast at point-blank range was powerful enough to fracture his skull and drive bone fragments into his brain, causing catastrophic injuries. He never regained consciousness and died six days later, at age 26. His death became one of the best-known examples of why blank ammunition can still be deadly at very close range.

During maneuvers in ‘88, I caught a blank 5.56 from an M16, without a blank adapter, from about four feet away! The medics pulled over twenty burnt and unburnt pieces of powder out of my face! My wearing large aviator glasses (real glass), were the only things that saved my eyes!

The red .22 "blanks" aren't actually blanks they are designed for a tool that drives nails into concrete. That is why it is more powerful than the 9mm blank.

The .22 have uses in nail guns and such whereas the 9mm are 99% just for noise and smoke so the .22 probably has more powerful a load and may have a corking agent to ensure a full burn , where the 9mm would deliberately exclude anything that might be a projectile

Sometimes fragments of the folded case nose become projectiles which would bleed you dry in a major artery. The best rule is that every gun is loaded and lethal, and must be treated as such at all times.

We were conducting active shooter entry training in an abandoned building using shotgun blanks. No we were not pointing the shotgun at anyone. It was pointed into the air. One pull of the trigger and a suspended ceiling tile blew to pieces and fell on our heads. It was a delayed LOL moment and we were glad that we maintained firearms safety protocol. Things could have been bad.

During my basic training whilst being introduced to the then standard SLR (7.62 mm cold war beast of a rifle) our NCO demonstrated the danger of 'blank' rounds by firing one from about 2 feet at a notebook, it basically blew a rather ragged hole straight through it! We got the message pretty darn quickly.
