Me and Gabriella are back reviewing **Lanterns Episode 6**, this time reacting to **Super Reel's breakdown of the episode**.
And before we even got started, Gabriella said:
*βI need a refresher.β*
π
I told her:
*THAT'S BECAUSE THIS WAS THE MOST BORING EPISODE OF THE SHOW!*
I'm sorry.
I've been critical of Lanterns all season.
I've complained about the pacing.
I've complained about the lack of action.
I've complained about how grounded they've made everything.
I've complained about how little they're taking advantage of the Green Lantern mythology.
But Episode 6?
*THIS ONE WAS ROUGH.*
This might be the slowest episode of an already slow show.
And somehow...
We got an entire episode of a GREEN LANTERN series with...
*ZERO CONSTRUCTS.*
ZERO!
π
How?!
Green Lantern has one of the coolest powers in comic books.
You have a ring that allows you to create practically anything your imagination and willpower can produce.
Weapons.
Vehicles.
Creatures.
Armor.
Whatever you can imagine.
And somehow we're SIX EPISODES into this show and I'm still begging:
*CAN I SEE SOME GREEN LANTERN?!*
π
And watching this episode with Gabriella highlights another problem I've been having.
She still doesn't really understand Green Lantern lore.
Which is completely understandable!
She's a casual superhero fan.
She shouldn't have to read 30 years of Green Lantern comics before watching an HBO show.
Normally, this is where I could help.
She asks:
*βWhat does this mean?β*
And I explain the comic lore.
Except with *Lanterns*...
*I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL HER!*
π
Because they've changed so much.
I can explain how something works in the comics.
But then I have to immediately say:
*βWellβ¦ that's how it NORMALLY works. I don't know if that's how THIS show is doing it.β*
That's a problem.
And I'm not saying adaptations aren't allowed to change things.
CHANGE WHATEVER YOU WANT.
But when you change the rules, the characters and pieces of the mythology, then the SHOW has to establish its own rules clearly enough that somebody like Gabriella can understand them.
That's what makes her perspective so interesting to me.
I know enough Green Lantern lore to recognize what they've changed.
Gabriella doesn't.
She's simply watching what's presented to her.
And she's STILL confused.
Then we have the pacing.
I understand character development.
I LIKE character development.
Some of my favorite shows take their time.
I've defended slow episodes of shows I love when they're actually developing characters and relationships in interesting ways.
*SLOW DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN BAD.*
But there's a difference between:
*SLOW AND INTERESTING*
and
*SLOW AND BORING.*
For me?
Episode 6 was the second one.
π
And we're running out of episodes!
That's what makes this even more frustrating.
Earlier in the season, whenever people complained about the lack of action or Green Lantern elements, the response was:
*WAIT.*
Let them build the story.
Let them develop John.
Let them develop Hal.
The cosmic stuff is coming.
The constructs are coming.
The Green Lantern mythology is coming.
Okay...
*I WAITED!*
π
We're SIX EPISODES IN!
How long am I supposed to wait for a Green Lantern show to start feeling like GREEN LANTERN?
And that's why I'm probably more critical of this episode than Gabriella is.
Gabriella can look at Episode 6 and say:
*βThat was boring.β*
I look at it and think:
*βTHAT was boring AND you're sitting on decades of incredible Green Lantern material that could've made this so much more interesting!β*
π
That's the difference.
I don't need Lanterns to copy the comics panel-for-panel.
I don't need every episode to be a giant CGI battle.
I don't need John creating a fighter jet with his ring every five minutes.
But give me SOMETHING.
Make the ring feel special.
Make being a Green Lantern feel special.
Make this enormous universe feel bigger than a couple of guys investigating things on Earth.
Because right now?
I feel like I'm watching a grounded detective show that occasionally remembers the detectives have Green Lantern rings.
And Episode 6 pushed that problem further than any episode before it.
π Let us know in the comments:
*Did you enjoy Lanterns Episode 6? Are we being too hard on the slower pacing, or are you ALSO wondering how we got an entire Green Lantern episode with ZERO constructs?*
