Based on the power of my wallet, someone must have a lot of money out there

Bet. Imma make a story where the main character who is very empathetic and has the ability to copy other people’s abilities and and an antagonist who is very closed off and has the ability to nullify people’s abilities.

The fact Asta can control his antimagic so precisely (chosing when and which spell to nullify) is what makes him great for combo attacks. It might come off as weird at first, but it was definitely a good decision by Tabata.

my favourite moment with asta and yuno is when they're fighting zagred.

zagred is a devil with word-soul magic. this means he's got more mana than yuno could ever possibly have and his ability is to spend mana to speak things into being. during the fight with him, zagred hurls a storm of blades at yuno and asta, who are standing side by side. they perfectly parry each one.

the thing is though, half the swords are actual metal, and half of them are random spells disguised as metal swords. yuno is countering the metal ones, asta is countering the spells, perfectly, in sync, never once slowing the other down. asta's antimagic isn't interfering with yuno's wind, and yuno's wind isn't drawing asta's aim.

their abilities should literally work against each other and slow the other down. but they never once use them like that, even by accident.

When you mentioned combos being a show of dependency it made me think of Momo and Okarun in Dandadan. How she uses her ghost hands to help redirected his bull charges. They compliment each other so well. She lacks the explosive speed that he has, he lacks the control that she has. Together they approximate balance.

The production quality of that thumbnail is amazing. Legendary PintIsHere pull.

Great video. Did a great job breaking down how Shonen powers are reflective of strong character writing and relationship dynamics. Thank you for your great analysis videos. Very helpful for future storytellers

Currently writing a story, have it in mind since like 10 years and currently developing it. Long story short:

Main character has an ability to equivalently exchange and "trade" properties of two things by touching each of them with one hand (think for example of one hand touching a piece of clothing while the other touches his own stomach to feel no pain when being thrown a punch at, since it would simply feel like punching  cloth). At the same time, the cloth would have the properties of skin, so it could get bruised by a punch but he wouldn't feel pain.

The main antagonist's is creating a power system of its own  that works like an "economy" based on value, functioning only on selling, buying and theft.
Every person has a certain level of "value" based on what they own.
If he manages to get something from someone, either by buying it or stealing it, it can become a small scale power on its own.

The higher the "value" someone has, the more he's interested in destroying their life (example: buying a watch from someone poor can have him slow down time for one second, stealing one amplifies that effect to 3 seconds. If he does that to someone rich, the value is higher and it can be 3 seconds to begin with, 6 with stealing) as his goal is to entirely submit the noble class and humiliate them, taking and stripping them of everything they have until their own lives have no more "value" left.
Only at that point, he can partially take their own abilities, so they have absolutely nothing left.

It sounds very op until you remember that he has to create a market for it to work, tricking someone into getting him to sell them something, with someone richer would make their "value" grow higher, which means he would then have to get it back to get an even stronger effect

Good video! It's also interesting when two characters have basically the same power but wield it differently (many such examples in Avatar the Last Airbender).

Great video as always :)

The powers should match the characters, unless gaining the powers are said to be random. Like devilfruits in One piece. Then it becomes annoyingly convenient. The chef just happened to get a food related power. Maybe it was the other way around, and they only became a chef after getting the power. But it could also have been used creatively for something else. Like having a really heavy weapon. They sure aren’t using it as intended, but it works for what they want to do.

The way I see Gold Experience Requiem being a counter of King Crimson, is explicitly mentioned by Diavolo.
It's an extension of Giorno's ability to give life.

King Crimson's ability to erase time means that the time that was erased was dead.
It's the perfect foil to Giorno's Gold Experience ability.

So Giorno's new Requiem stand gives life to that dead time - by resetting it to the period before it was erased.

My personal favorite has always been Chuuya Nakahara and Osamu Dazai. It's a very bitter relationship that borders on pure hatred sometimes, because Chuuya knows he's being manipulated, but knows that manipulation is better than what he'd do alone. And the powers reflect that because he's constantly stopping from being the best he can be, except when Dazai is present, because he knows that Dazai will stop him before he goes too far.

"IT'S OVER VILLAIN! I just sent sugar running through your bloodstream when I grabbed your wrists, it's too fast for you to react so enjoy hypoglycemia you bastard!"
"Really now? Because it would seem that you have forgotten that I am a blood mage, which means that I've not only redirected the sugar as soon as you sent it, but in our shared contact, I have restrained your white blood cells which means that nothing will protect you from the viruses I've sent."
"I knew you'd redirect them which is why I sent MORE sugar than even your body can handle!"
"But which will reach our livers first? Your sugar or my anthrax?"

Shikamaru is a wonderful example of this i just thought of too. He keeps everybody around him still because those are the times he operates best, like when he paused to meditate against Temari
