For Monika and Alexander Riedesel, their five children, and 13 grandchildren, life without the circus is unimaginable. Thirty years ago, the couple became self-employed with their idea of founding an interactive circus. Since then, they have toured the Stuttgart region with Circus Piccolo, traveling from place to place with their tents and caravans. Their greatest reward: the audience. "For us, there's nothing better than seeing people's faces light up."

While the Riedesel family is no stranger to crises, the pandemic and the resulting lack of performances have truly devastated them. Their income has plummeted, and they can no longer pay their bills. The circus family is facing ruin. But despite these numerous setbacks, the Riedesels refuse to give up hope and are determined to persevere. "We have to keep going. Otherwise, there's no point in continuing."

Many children, many siblings. In the SWR documentary series "Adventure Large Family," eight families showcase their turbulent lives, navigating the complexities of unity and conflict. Is the extended family model outdated or a timeless ideal, especially in uncertain times?
