What happens when you lack empathy and compassion?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright react to a bunch of Disney villains and diagnose them. Reminder: mental illness does not correlate to villainy! They discuss what the villains struggle with and what we can learn and apply in our lives. The Disney villains: Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Evil Queen from Snow White, Jafar from Aladdin, and Ursula from The Little Mermaid.

Do a DIAGNOSING DISNEY VILLAINS Part 2 on Hades, Scar, Maleficent, Cruella DeVille and Dr. Faciler! It would be cool and so much fun! 🤩

Sid from Toy Story would be an interesting analysis, especially for parents that might be wrestling with "destructive" children that need some serious realignment. Getting a sense of where that behaviour comes from, and how to address it as both a professional and a lay-person could be hugely beneficial.

I just realized that the mirror can literally tell you anything. It doesn’t have to be who’s the farest. She has infinite knowledge at her fingertips, but ONLY uses it to see if a child is prettier than her.

Villain Therapy should be done on Peter Pan. Dude who doesnt age lures children from their bedrooms to an Island, cuts off a man's hand and feeds it to a crocodile, then ridicules him about the mutilation.

Once Upon a Time (tv show) re- imagined these stories so well.

I just want to say... Peter Pan is not a child, he's a terrifying fey creature.

as an autistic person, i would LOVE to see you guys look at disney characters you think might be neurodivergent :)

I love how Captain Hook thinks he's so big and bad but then when the crocodile shows up he's all scared LOL

9:00 The queen is also comparing herself to a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD CHILD

I saw an interview with Pat Carroll where she said it's not just not disregard for Ariel that Ursula feels - it is DISGUST. Pat said that Ariel, being so sweet and young, makes Ursula sick to her stomach, and I guess when you're pursuing power, any perceived weakness is infuriating.

Jafar is honestly the first villain I remember as a kid defeated because the hero used his own ego and cruelty against him. Aladdin basically tricks the dude into sealing himself away since he can't stand NOT being the most powerful guy in the room.

3:25 Peter Pan is an "innocent child" only in the sense that he doesn't seem to comprehend the significance of his actions beyond "That sounds fun."

@wizbiz8888 1 month ago

I wouldn't say that Peter Pan is a child, though he might look like one. He canonically has all his baby teeth, has no long term memory, sense of empathy or understanding of consequence, thinking anything from a life or death battle to a day of playing Follow The Leader is nothing but a fleeting game to never be learned from or remembered. Through context clues and some guesswork, Peter Pan is over 60+ years old and very, very not psychologically a human, especially the book version. I think you would be hard pressed to diagnose such a being even though it started as a human child.

I haven't seen Aladdin in so long I completely forgot about "Tell me more about myself."
God, that line is a killer.

2:40 To quote Smee from Peter Pan 2, "At least the crocodile had manners." Tik tok croc leaves when told to. He doesn't like it, but he leaves.

Something I noticed was that the mirror also said that Snow White has “gentle grace”, which to me implies not her physical beauty, but her beauty within, something the Queen lacks & perhaps doesn’t understand that beauty is more than her reflection in the mirror.

What I think is funny about Aladdin is that Iago's plan (marry Jasmine, become sultan, dispose of Jasmine and sultan) is so much easier than Jafar's plan to find the lamp and would achieve most of his goals. If Jafar still wanted to find the lamp, as sultan he would have the resources of all Agrabah to pursue that end. It seems like Jafar needlessly complicates his own schemes.

@ReconViper1 5 months ago

Jafar didn't want Jasmine to fall for him because he wanted her; He doesn't even like her. He was having fun dominating and humiliating her and her father. To enslave her will would be the ultimate in domination.
When I saw the movie, I assumed that he wanted her aware of what she was doing, but unable to stop herself.
Best of all, from Jafars perspective; the Sultan forced to watch it happen.
