Randy is a victim of Urkel Syndrome: when a character becomes a fan favorite, so they get a lot more focus, but that causes the audience to get sick of them.

Randy Marsh: from Randy Marsh to Randy Marsh

I think it's very clear that Matt and Trey began relating to Randy more than the kids as they got older. The show really reflects where they are at the time.

This happens to every Dad in adult animated comedies.

>Starts out funny and relatable
>Becomes fan-favorite
>Jerk-Ass Homer.

I hated how some fans claimed Matt & Trey were “trolling the audience” by making the show bad on purpose. Like who gets enjoyment out of a show being unfunny just because they think the writers did it intentionally?

I can't believe Lorde fell off 😔

I think the main problem with Randy isn't a Tegridy problem. The main problem with Randy is that they use him for plots that are better suited for other adult characters. For example, it made perfect sense for Shelia to be the Karen for Streaming Wars' plot, and in Not Safe For Children it could have been Liane or Mr. Garrison for the OnlyFans plot line because it makes the most sense for those characters. Yet for all of these plots they made Randy the main character for them while reducing the other adults to boring generic background extras who are toned down and only Randy is allowed to be a character. Heck, someone even argued that they toned down Cartman to where it can be argued that Randy is the main antagonist for the show. I know it's been stated a lot that Trey and Matt relate to Randy more but why not use the other adults more? None of the other dads on the show get to do anything in terms of development or character wise and it sucks because I feel like there's a lot of adult characters on the show that can be interesting if they were used a lot more. Another issue with Randy is that every episode is the same formula of him getting into a trend while Sharon, Shelly, and Stan are there just to get annoyed by his antics until he either learns his lesson or loses. None of the 3 are hardly characters anymore but moreso a gag for Randy. I really hope for the next season that there's more variety in the adults for plots that suit them and not just the Randy Show.

It's more like Randy Marsh has the biggest character assassination in South Park, he went from a silly dumbass to a legit psychopath like Peter Griffin.

I miss when South Park was about the kids being kids throwing in innuendo

Like them playing cops and robbers and some crazy stuff happens

Matt Stone and Trey Parker hate Family Guy so much that they had to have their own Peter Griffin in the show.

When i hear “tegridy farms” I just start thinking about the part of the Stanley parable where the narrator says “are you sick of this gag yet?” over and over

It’s still wild to look back at early Randy and witness just how radically different his character became.

Everytime Randy is mentioned I think of the fangirl selfshipper who has her whole room dedicated to him

I think what people miss is, Matt and Trey clearly get bored easily with projects. They've done cartoons, Broadway musicals, and a political puppet show.

To me, the rise of Randy is indicative of them getting bored with the core cast. Stan and Kyle are milk toast leads and have had over 20 years to react to increasingly crazy stuff. That's not fun to write for after a while. Butters was fodder for new plots for a while, but Randy has agency in the way the kids don't. Because he's an adult, he can drive action a lot more easily and create scenarios rather than have the kids react to paper thin contemporary politics.

Now, Randy is running its course and the narrative direction seems to be giving Cartman the karma he was denied for decades.

19:03 Lorde taking the parody on the chin like that was something I learned as a kid and thought “wait celebrities don’t just get mad at South Park?” 😂

Randy is a great character, he was just overused for quite awhile, but I can't blame Matt and Trey for loving Randy.

0/10 it didn’t open with “when I was a kid, I used to be a huge fan of this show called South Park”

I still absolutely love the Lorde gag. He's obviously just imitating her and eventually will be revealed right? Nope, he's actually just canonically Lorde. I don't think I've ever seen a show do that even if it wasnt the original intent.

To me, what is missing is what made the show special to me... we used to see real world and adult issues tackled from the prospective of kids and a school yard scale. The more they leaned in to the adults and making this so big to often it started to lose the charm. I know some of the best episodes do go large scale like the WoW episode, but one of my favorites is the LotR episode was amazing because it was huge to the kids, but it was small scale. They more or less re did the LotR movies, but in 22 minutes and such a smaller scale. Still a fan of the show, but it just doesn't hit like it did 10 years ago.
