In this episode of A Changed Mind, David Bayer explains why you can leave a relationship, meet someone completely different, and end up in the exact same relationship all over again.

Different face, different personality, different story, and eventually the same pattern. You keep attracting people who abandon you, or control you, or put you in a position where you have to fight to be loved. What makes it stranger is that these people often seem like the opposite of who they eventually become. David's answer is that the people entering your life are not random. They are curriculum.

He builds the case from soul contracts: the idea that you came into this life with an intention toward growth, and that in order to become something, you start as the absence of it. To become confident you may grow up in conditions that produce insecurity. To learn surrender you may be raised inside control. Your parents establish the original conditions, and then comes what David calls contract continuation, where other people enter and play out new versions of that same contract. The mechanism is vibrational: the mirror principle, where reality reflects your current consciousness back to you so you can grow past it. He frames it as resistance training. If you came here to build a quality, life supplies the resistance through which it gets built.

Then he gets specific about what to do with it. Drawing on Colin Tipping's Radical Forgiveness, David takes the position that he is one hundred percent responsible for what shows up in a relationship, and he is careful about the limits: this is not a reason to stay with someone abusive or with an active addict. He illustrates with his own marriage, the conflict over how the house gets organized, and the distinction that unlocked it. If you are thinking something that does not feel good, it is not true. The problem was never that his wife was telling him where things go. The problem was his belief that she should not be.

The back half is about what happens when one person does the work. David explains why most conflicts are two stories having a relationship rather than two people, tells the story of the couple who had not argued in 15 years and what they did to get there, and makes the case for entrainment: when you become the dominant vibration and stop arguing back, your partner finally gets to see themselves clearly. Doing your own work, he argues, is the greatest gift you can give the person you love, and the relationship becomes the greatest spiritual teacher you will ever have.
