Two things can be true. Betty was mad at Don, but she was unable to take it out on him. Instead, she took it out on Sarah Beth. However, Sarah Beth has no one to blame but herself. They're both wrong, and they shouldn't be friends.

Betty had only just found out about Don cheating on her with Bobbie Barret and basically lashed out and wanted to mess up her friends marriage too. I think Betty was especially angry about the concept of cheating at this time and she wanted to see if her friend would actually go for it, but its true, Betty did not MAKE her do anything.  This was just honestly one of the more interesting, somewhat unexplained things that happened in this series

I empathised with Betty alot. She was constrained by the times they lived in and was dealing with being in a marriage to Don. I think all of the pressure it put on her was bound to come out some way or the other. She was a better person in her marriage to Henry and I never really understood why there wasn't more compassion for her.

That being said, I don't think the affair here would have happened without her instigation. What she did was exploit people's vulnerabilities for sport. Like taking someone who has been starving for a while and asking them to guard a ton of food for an unspecified time. Then when they inevitable succumb and take some to eat, blame them knowing fully well that feeding them beforehand would have reduced the chances of that happening. It was cruel and it would have been far kinder to have admonished/ cautioned Sarah Beth  when she had covetous thoughts.
