Dismissing cults as "oh well they're adults" is like saying the law shouldn't go after scammers because the victims of scams are "adults who made the decision to hand over their money". Doesn't make sense when you think about it practically. Regardless of how you feel about people who fall for scams, we obviously can't just let scammers go unprosecuted or unbothered, right? Cults are just ideological scams. Same thing.

I was raised in a cult. I was able to walk away. But I do not blame some of the people who didn't. But others stayed just to abuse other members. Those are the ones I blame.

Once people become so emotionally invested in a group, [a religion, a sports team, a politician, a cult], it is almost impossible to separate your own personal identity from the group. You can't stand to hear anything bad against the group because you take it personally and you know You are good.
Also, in a cult, their life and livelihoods are involved.  They get sucked in so slowly, it could happen to almost anyone. At first, it is wonderful. That is what is happening to these people. It is very hard to break free. Be careful out there.

I realize i wasn't under his creepy spell so it's easy for me to judge but its always so hard to fathom how anyone could be sucked in by such a foul looking, weird dude 😂

I wasn’t in this group, but i did spend 30 years in mormonism. So much of what each cult does is the same shit in a differently branded wrapper.

I was in this cult for 1 year, in Santa Fe New Mexico. These were the most beautiful people l have ever met, eventually l left the group and went back to Los Angeles. Some 10 years later the group imploded in a sexual scandal. The leader was and still is a lost perverted soul, with a sprinkle of sociopathic behavior. Hope these people recuperated from their experience.

It’s amazing how you can cover any type of story , no matter how crazy, weird or scary it is, and you find a way to put the “Noor Jasmine” touch in - you research and examine every scary, sick or sad detail yet you sprinkle it with a touch of humor and a load of humanity and make it interesting and captivating for your audience.  Bravo again for a job, as always, well-done.

i think it's easy for us from the outside to say that we'd never fall for a cult, but cults take many shapes and forms, and they can use different tactics to suck you in. all it takes is one exploited insecurity, one piece of blackmail, one day of vulnerability, one tragedy, etc etc etc. in fact, part of me feels like the "i would never fall for a cult" mentality actually helps cults in two ways. one, it can be used as a shield for cult members ("of course i'm not in a cult, i would never fall for that, etc.") and can be used to keep people /in/ a cult ("if people knew that you were doing this they'd think you were stupid/deserved it/etc"). what's important is to stay vigilant and be aware of the different forms cults can take, and that way you can protect yourself from them more than if you just decided you were too smart to fall for a cult.

You always bring us the weirdest cult stories. I haven't heard of this deep space cowboy yet. The more cult videos I watch the more I think about Heaven's Gate and how relatively innocent they were. It's a mad world, yo
