Simo was just basically hunting in a target rich environment. A good hunter knows how to hide

Aarne Juutilainen served 5 years in French foreign legion when he was younger he got the terror of Morocco nickname there as they were fighting in Morocco near Atlas mountains against rebels.

Interesting Fact:
Recently during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, a couple of Ukrainian soldiers went to Finland for sniper training. They brought with them to a visit to Simo Hayha’s grave a oberih doll as a talisman for protection and good luck.
Meaning the Ukrainians asked Simo Hayha permission to come down and assist them to kill the Russians once again!

When interviewed and asked how he felt about killing so many enemy: "I only did my duty, and what I was told to do as well as I could. There would be no Finland anymore if not all did the same."

And don't worry about the pronunciation, you are quite close to correct

4:11 And since the rifle found its way into a video, it's now a tax write-off.

He was asked what he felt when he killed an enemy. He said "recoil".

brother i did my training and i hope men like you help us defend Finland  against the evil of mans greed

Häyhä maintained his precision until the very end; it is said that even in his 90s, he could hit a matchbox from a long distance. The distance: Häyhä shot the matchbox from a range of 100–150 meters.

He won the war by attrition. A true warrior.

My grandfather fought beside Simo Häyhä ! I love your reaction to the video!  Though I'm a Finnish / Canadian, I want to thank you for your service !!

I'm from Finland and I appreciate how you've looked into the correct pronunciation of Simo Häyhä's name. Thank you so much. It makes me cringe every time I hear "Hey-ha".

4:54 you can skip the add, the thing that makes me angry is the people who skip the funny skit in front

About the expoding bullet that hit Simo. The bullet wasn't exactly and exploding, but more like hollow point bullet or expanding bullet. After little searching it was a dum-dum bullet. It was designed in 1890s but it was banned in 1899 in "The Hague Peace Conference of 1899" for being too brutal or inhumane.

I am so happy you recognized "Enemy at the gates" ... great movie but not many have seen it talking to ppl online

Häyhä was an ordinary Finn who didn't like being around strangers...

13:52 picture says it all. He done insane s*it while pushing through insane s*it, developed so much PTSD it became just nostalgia well before retirement, so he kept returning to the battlefields to command the troops like your most beloved grandpa, rocking in his rocking chair, smoking the smokepipe in the FOB like it is christmas in wood bale cabin... legendary figure.

Aarne, had a brother who joined the Finnish Air Force, and during the continuation war which occurred concurrently with operation Barbarossa, he earned the nickname of the untouchable pilot. No matter what mission he flew he always came back with an undamaged machine. It seems the Juutilinen bloodline are just bad asses.

Ok, let me explain this a little bit. I am absolute fan of Fat electrician, he actually does some reseach and his style is funny and less full of BS than many people who make these kinda videos. Normally I do not correct issues or explain too much of these kinda videos but since you are soldier I explain few things, which are hard to know unless you are a Finn, Finnish history professor or old person who has shot all kinda guns.

I served as a concript in Finnish military in a place what I could explain Nordic green barrets and after uni 25 years in police forces including what you would call SWAT.

That's about me, now my both grandfathers fought in winter war, continious war and Lapland war so 1939 to 1945, both survived and had many medals. One of them served also in Kollaa where Simo was.

Now the things I want to correct is that everybody who has shot and hunted with ironsight have to become exellent to estimate distance. Otherwise you will miss your shots. Depending to gun you were using scaling was 100m difference and half point between every 100m but some had smaller scales so you have to learn pinpoint and calculate distances otherwise you will miss. Not taking away any credit from Simo Häyhä, but that was not inhumane skill, just skill you had yo learn. Naturally some were better than others.
What comes to skiing, it was normal way of moving. My mom had her school 8km away since first grade. So in winter time she had to ski trough forrest to school 5 times per week and back. So badicly everybody was pro skier at that time. If you win trophies, you had to be legend level like Häyhä.
Now there are several stories about Häyhä's first kills and even some official sources say he shot for head. If that really happened, he missed his aiming point, since no real sniper or hunter aim for head for small targets. You would have to be idiot hunter even if you saw grey groose on a tree and you aim for the head. You aim for torso and leathal area of it. Headshot simply means you missed your pointer and you got lucky. So definetly Häyhä did not try headshot because from that distance you cannot even see human head because it is size of sharp end of needle and since Häyhä was truly great shooter he hit to torso because he aimed for it.

"Generals" mittens story, it is tru but not as amazing as it sounds like for non Finns. We had presidents wifes, current and exes who did knitted hundreds of mittens and socks for normal soldiers to keep them warm during one of the most coldest winters in Finnish history. Now even President's wife mittens or socks were not treated differently and army collected all amazing handywork women at the time made and just gave them to soldiers. Not a big thing. Naturally like this kinda thing happened when you got specially made clothing by somebody it was nice but overall not that big thing in that era.

About Mannerheim gross ( your medal of honour ). Less that 200 people got it and only 4 people got it 2 times. Now for normal soldier the medal itself was big thing, but not as big thing as you think. Firstly it was new and most soldiers did not even knew about it. What made it intresting that it had 50k markka ( our old currency ) extra fee which meant that you could build a nice size of house with that money.
It was not because paper pushers that Häyhä never got it, but more like common sence. During Häyhä's service it did not exist and there were a lot of guys who would have earned it during winter war. Now the thing is, if you do deserve a medal that did not exist during your war. Who else we have to give it, how many old wars we have to go bavk etc. So they gave Häyhä what was really important, the money for a house.

But these things are not easy to understand unless you are Finn or understand so many things that took an effect. Like my dad always said that he never saw his father-in-law missing a shot when hunting. I also was lucky to have grandfather that was alive when I became a hunting age. Now one big reason for this that my grandfather was exellent shooter but he also was from times when bullets were expensive, so he only shot when he was sure he can make a shot. This mentality also gives some perspective. Was Simo Häyhä a legend? Absolutely and deserves his reputation 10x, but reason he seldom missed is that his mentality was 150m is easy distance, but still do not try magic sniping and wait until you are sure. Also big part was that at the time Soviet soldiers had green or brown ( some political officers ) uniforms and against snowy forrest, not worst but still enough bad camo. Also big numbers also mean more targets. In reality Häyhä was very modest man, he would not like this kinda attention, eventough he deserves it.

Anyway just to few pointers where Fat electrician went a bit too far and I still think he is great in many ways compared to people who make their videos based on other videos or based what wikipedia told.

21:10 Yeah, the Russians didn't realize it, but this was Snow Vietnam, and while the trees weren't talking, the snowbanks were. Simo is basically just sub-zero Charlie. Gives a whole different meaning to "stay frosty" doesn't it? :p

Imagine a country where almost everyone is a soldier. Yes Finland 🇫🇮
