The combine are some of the best sci-fi soldiers out there. They’re futuristic and hi-tech, yet grounded and realistic. And I can’t get enough of their voice lines. The way they speak is this bizarre clinical and robotic language spoken by still very human soldiers. Also Parrythegod’s animations are truly stellar. I’m glad to hear someone loves his depictions of Combine as much as I do.

The subtle implication that H&K sold out to the Combine always makes me laugh.

The oxygen tank on the grunt could mean that they're mainly sent to handle areas with high xen-infestation.

I have decided to continue writing my own si fi universe because of this

Me ready to throw away my humanity to work for yet another evil organization
(their armor looked cool)

I love how Wall Hammer is such a simple yet perfect name for a heavy defencive support infantry unit.

I have a theory about why Combine soldiers look the way they do in Half-Life 2. I think it’s because of "regional" assimilation, not just design style. City 17 is clearly somewhere in Eastern Europe probably the Baltic/Balkan/Black Sea, maybe Mediterranean region and the Combine are using whatever infrastructure and equipment already existed there.

The gas masks are based on old Soviet designs, MP7s and USP pistol from the German manufacturer H&K just to the West, the SPAS-12 imported from Israel.

The Combine essentially took local infrastructure and surplus and modified it with their own tech and manufacturing and utilized it in that specific region. And with that said it also means something way more interesting…. Combine forces in North America, South America, or Asia would look completely different. Their armor, weapons, and tech would all be shaped by whatever industry and logistics existed in those regions before the occupation.

Eastern Europe just happens to produce the specific hybrid of Combine tech + European/Soviet leftovers that we see in HL2.

Probably why the Charger is so mocking is to keep the targets attention on them. D&D tank logic, taunt enemy, let the rest of the party kill it.

those pauldrons are bigger than mine

I wish there was a bit more dissection of Combine idle chatter in Alyx; like the way Overwatch seems to be able to directly modify their cognition via 'biodata', bringing them in consistent cohesion.

The suppressor’s separated eyes may serve as a sort of mini-rangefinder similar to coincidence rangefinders. For someone constantly needing to evaluate correct ranges for suppressive fire that could potentially be useful. (Or Valve wanted him to be easy to pick out and target in a crowd)

the suppressor is obviously inspired by the cremator, from the mask to the tummy ammo thing

I always liked the idea that the Combine had so many speciality units before HL2 because they still had faced some great challenge from the rebels and xin life running amok.
By the time we get to the later games, it makes sense why their soldier units were so simplified  even in their specialties… so they scaled down. Scary to think they are literally going to extract earth and until it is a desiccated celestial husk of baron empty rock over thousands and thousands of years…. And will take all resources with them just as slow slowly.

I’m not sure if it was added to the vanilla game but there are mods that implement a scrapped behavior of chargers actually sprinting towards you with a baton. That’s terrifying in VR

I believe the Grunts are largely recycled from the Conscripts of the HL2 beta. They both wear little armor/simple fatigues, rank very low on the Overwatch hierarchy (perhaps even below Civil Protection), and the Grunts have noticeably less mental reprogramming, similar to the Conscripts being almost entirely normal humans.

Heres my oponion on the combine ranks. Top is higher rank bottom is lower

It be so cool if they added more combine units like a heavy armored flame trooper, grenade launcher wielding bombardier, medic, and jet pack crazed marksman

My favorite thing I stim is just combine chatter. I love it so much I stan the combin

Never have I realized that in their perspective, they (the combine) are the badass purging aliens for trying to mess things up with the dimensions.

What I mean is, in Warhammer's term, They are the Imperium and we are the Xenos.

Damn, now I know what it feels to be an Eldar.

this video is so underrated, i come and rewatch it every couple weeks
