The Walton Family: How Did They Keep $520 Billion in One Piece?

In 1953, nine years before the first Walmart, Sam Walton made his four children his partners. In 2024, eleven Waltons signed one page that keeps the family's shares voting as one.

This is the story of a fortune given away before it was worth much, and of the structure built so it could not be divided: the 1953 partnership, the deaths that moved nothing, the trusts, the buybacks that raised the family's share without a share bought, and the irrevocable proxy of 18 December 2024.

Every document shown is on the public record: SEC filings (Schedules 13D and 13G, Forms 4, Walmart's proxy statements), the family's own statements, and Sam Walton's book. Readings of written words are dramatised and labelled as such; the voices in the soundbites are the people themselves. Net worth figures are Forbes and Bloomberg estimates, dated on screen.
