06:00 UTC, Monday 31 August — The Equatorial Pacific. A record-breaking El Niño is forming here, thousands of kilometres from Europe, and forecasters now put the odds of it becoming a very strong event this winter at ninety-five per cent — on track to be the strongest ever reliably recorded. Coral drilled from the Galápagos Islands shows recent El Niño events are the most intense in a thousand years, and this one has not yet reached its peak. For Europe the effect arrives not in the tropics but through the North Atlantic storm track and the polar vortex over the Arctic — the machinery that decides whether the coming winter is mild and wet or bitterly cold. Which of those two winters the continent gets is still unresolved, and it turns on a single change, high in the stratosphere, that has not yet happened.

The Meridian Desk tracks the planet from the European side of the map — earthquakes, eruptions, floods, windstorms, heatwaves, and the space weather that lights up northern skies. Every video delivers the data, what Europe's own agencies are saying, and what comes next in twenty to twenty-five minutes.

New videos three to four times a week.
