00:00 UTC, Monday 21 September — The North Atlantic.
For the first time in 112 years, the Atlantic has reached the depth of its hurricane season with not one hurricane anywhere in the basin — a silence last seen in 1914, before anyone alive today was watching. Its best hope, Tropical Storm Fay, peaked about 6 km/h short of hurricane strength and then came apart over open water some 620 km southwest of the Azores. This is Europe's ocean, and its hurricanes are the systems that reach the continent every autumn as violent windstorms — the Ophelia and Lorenzo pathway. The engine holding the basin down is a record-strength El Niño half a world away, now near 3 °C above normal and still climbing. Whether that quiet is safety or a held breath is the question the season's final act will answer.
The Meridian Desk tracks the planet from the European side of the map — earthquakes, eruptions, floods, windstorms, heatwaves, and the space weather that lights up northern skies. Every video delivers the data, what Europe's own agencies are saying, and what comes next in twenty to twenty-five minutes.
New videos three to four times a week.
