The Nubian ship lands gently into the desert sands of Tatooine. As Qui-gon sets out to leave the ship, Obi-Wan pulls him aside.
Obi-Wan: Master, if we wish to get back to Coruscant, we will need to repair or replace the hyperdrive generator. I’m not optimistic about our chances of finding one on this planet
Qui-Gon: Hmm. This will complicate things. However, let us trust that the Force has brought us here for a reason.
Qui-Gon, Jar, Jar and a disguised Queen Amidala exit the ship and head out to the streets of Mos Espa. Qui-Gon cannot help but note the vast range of poverty and villainy in the dusty town. As they wander through the streets, merchants peddle their wares. One merchant in particular gets their attention.
Jira: Get your pallies here! Oh, hello weary offworlders what brings you to our humble city?
Qui-Gon: How do you know we are offworlders?
Jira: Many are offworlders here. Here. Have these pallies as a gift. I don’t want you to die of heat stroke.
Qui-Gon: Thank you. In truth, we landed here due to our ship being damaged. We’re looking for a T-14 hyperdrive generator. Do you know where we can find one?
Jira: Starships are far beyond my expertise, off-worlder, but I know exactly where you can find one. You’ll want to head to Ani’s Junk Shop.
Qui-Gon: Ani’s Junk shop? That doesn’t sound like a very promising place to find a functional hyperdrive generator.
Jira: Don’t be fooled by the name. The shop used to belong to a toydarian called Watto, until one of his former slaves bought it from him using winnings from pod racing.
Jira looks at Padme and gives her a smile with a glimmer of mischievousness in her eyes.
Jira: The Boy’s about your age, young lady. Charming he is, big heart too, and a bigger passion for all things machine-related. If he doesn't have the exact part you need I’m sure he’ll know how to improvise something to get your ship going.
Qui-Gon bows to Jira in gratitude as they continue onwards through the market until they arrive at the shop, a crowded, well-used space filled with the heavy smell of machine oil and ozone.
A moment later, Anakin steps out, wiping grease off his hands with a worn rag. Dressed in a practical mechanic’s tunic, he stands at the exact same height as Padmé. He’s a tall, grounded young man with sharp eyes, windblown hair. Padmé finds herself taken aback as his gaze
.
Anakin: "Welcome! I’m Anakin, but most people around here call me Ani. You don’t look like you’re from around here. How can I help you?"
Qui-Gon: "We are looking for a T-14 hyperdrive generator for a Nubian J-type starship."
Anakin: "A T-14? Yep, definitely not from around here. But, you’re in luck! I actually salvaged one off a damaged star-yacht two weeks ago. Cleaned the core, replaced the drive-spools, and recalibrated the power flow myself. It’s sitting right in the back vault, ready to mount."
Qu-Gon: "It seems we are in luck, indeed. We would like to purchase it from you.”
Anakin: "For a complete unit, standard rate is twenty thousand peggats. But seeing as you're in a bind, I can let it go for eighteen."
Qui-Gon: "I have twenty thousand Republic credits right here."
Anakin: "Republic credits? Those aren’t any good out here. The Outer Rim doesn't care about Coruscant politics. Beyond the tiny bit of precious metal used to gild those chips, they're useless plastic. The gold on those wouldn't buy you a bucket of water, let alone a hyperdrive."
Qui-Gon (calmly, smoothly): "Republic credits will be fine."
Anakin (surprised): "Whoa, hold on! Did you just try a mind trick on me?"
Padmé shifts her gaze between Qui-Gon and Anakin, surprised, while Jar Jar backs up a step. Instead of being offended or angry, Anakin looks like a kid who just saw a magic trick up close. He beams with pure excitement.
