The iron bars of the Coruscant high-security containment facility hum with a heavy suppression field, dampening the subtle vibrations of the Force. Inside, Sheev Palpatine sits motionless on a bench, his hands folded neatly over his lap. Sly Moore stands on the opposite side of the ray shield, her face tight with agitation.
Sly (quietly):  My Lord. The guards on this level can be bypassed. I have secured the clearance codes, and a stealth transport is waiting in the lower levels of the Works. Let me release you. We can vanish into the Unknown Regions, reassemble our forces, and—
Sidious (firm):  No.
Sly (urging):  But.. My Lord... the Senate has already appointed Mas Amedda. They are systematically purging your former allies from the committees. Every hour you remain here, they tighten the net.
Sidious (calm):  Let them. Amedda is weak and remarkably easy to manipulate. The Senate believes that by locking away one man, they have cured the disease. They do not realize the rot was never in the Chancellor's office. It is in the foundation of the Republic itself. This is merely a temporary setback.
Sly:  And the grand design? The Republic guards, the Jedi, the Republic's infrastructure... they are all re-aligning.
Sidious:  The plan for the Grand Army will move forward, Darth Treachora. It will simply be approached from a different angle. The Jedi still serve a corrupt master. The Republic is still bankrupt, fractured, and terrified. They will justify the need for an army; they just need a different reason to do so.
Sly:  And Count Dooku? He has gone silent. He has cut off all encrypted channels to Coruscant. I fear he will use the CIS as a rogue faction to use against us.
Sidious:  Your instincts serve you well my apprentice. Dooku’s abandonment is... a pity. His pride has always been his weakness. He saw our defeat here and assumes it is a failure of the Sith. He has abandoned our cause to pursue his own pathetic vision of a reformed Confederacy. He forgets that while the Confederacy may have been built by his credits, it was built on my terms, and under my guidance. Dooku may run, but the CIS remains a weapon we crafted. And weapons can always be reclaimed, or turned against those who think they control them. Go now, my apprentice. Let Coruscant celebrate its fragile triumph. Let the Jedi lower their guard. We shall build our power in the shadows of their arrogance, as the Sith have always done.
Sly:  It shall be done, my Master.

**10 YEARS LATER**
The lush canopy of the Naboo forest hums with vibrant, primal life. Five-year-old Leia Skywalker-Amidala sits in total stillness on a sunlit moss patch with legs crossed, her eyes closed, and her chest rising with slow, deliberate breaths. Rather than reaching outward into the light, her senses sink inward and downward, feeling the silent ebb and flow of nature: the predator stalking its prey, the root choking the seed, the patient, ancient strength of the shadows.
A sudden, razor-thin ripple cuts through the Force, a whisper of cold malice rushing up behind her.
Without opening her eyes, Leia shifts her weight and drops low to the mossy ground. A crimson blade flashes overhead, searing the humid air with a crackle. In one fluid motion, she spins on her knees, grabs a heavy hardwood training staff, and swings it backward with all the momentum her small frame can muster.
Her attacker releases a guttural groan as the staff strikes metal armor with a dry crack. Her attacker chuckles, stepping back and deactivating his lightsaber. Maul, now wearing the dark, refined armor of the Royal Master of the Blade, stands over her. He looks down at the young girl, who now stands in a low guard stance, her chest heaving, her eyes open and dark with focus.
Maul:  Very good. You did not flinch, nor did you reach for fear. You let the strike guide your defense.
Leia: The shadow doesn't get scared of the sun, Uncle Maul. It just hides under the leaves until it's time to come back out.
Maul:  A true Nightsister's answer.
