Fujifilm Dynamic Range Priority (2025)

Dynamic Range Priority setting on Fujifilm cameras and how it affects the highlights, shadows, and contrast of the photos. Dynamic range is a complex topic that involves ISO, camera processing, and RAW files.

NOTE: I will be in court on a jury starting next week. So I'm not sure what day I'll be back, but hopefully I can get a new video out to you all soon! I have a LOT of them awaiting that final coat paint before they are handed off to you! 👍

My youtube subtitles were on and amused me no end as they kept calling it deranged priority setting.

You are singlehandedly carrying the Fujfilm community alive lol. And I love it. As someone using Fuji, please don't ever stop making these content!

Can you do a more in-depth video between the regular DR setting and this DR Priority setting please? I’m still a little confused about it

Thank you for your always fantastic teachings.
I'm not a native English speaker, I'm Italian, and I apologize for any mistakes, but I wanted to compliment you on your content.
Your content is so valuable it overcomes the language barrier.
Thanks again.

I have JUUUST started to figuring out how to use it (struggling to understand because there are too many self-declining info over the internet about DR), and here you are. Just SECONDS ago. I... Honestly, I can't remember when I had the same coincidence :D
Starting to watch, thank you~!
Edit 1: About lens hood. As for me, a small lens hood is okay. Reason: I have always seen it as a protection method first than all, so as long as cap can protect - it's good.
Edit 2: (not native English speaker, sorry for mistakes)
Edit 3: fixing spelling mistakes, sorry again. :D

How crazy that you mentioned jury duty, as I am watching this while waiting to get into jury duty. Thanks for making the wait more pleasant while also teaching something useful.

I would love a video about how the raw files in LR/C1 preserve the shadows and highlights when comparing DR400 vs DR-P strong raw files. I’ve been enjoying DR-P strong when out in nature lately but sometimes find it to be a little over cooked and HDR-y.

Deranged priority. I love it.

my XE-5 arrived today, my weekend plans are set!

The small lenscap works super fine, same cap they used on the 27mm WR that came out years back.
Thanks for sharing.

First, many thanks for all of the videos you have published on the Fuji line. They have been extremely helpful as a new photographer.

However, this is something I have really struggled with using my X-T5. It seems like anytime I have been trying to take large landscape photos, I end up with either a blown out sky or ground that's so dark you can't see much of anything. The RAWs are better than the JPEGs, but it's still been super frustrating. I just looked though and it's set to DR400. I set it to auto based on this video, but I'm not sure if that's the right move or not because it's consistently shooting at ISO125 when the camera is set to auto, which doesn't seem to align with my understanding from the video. Because of all of this, I would also like to request a more in-depth video on these settings like a few other people have.

I like the tiny lens caps 😁

@AmberHelenaReisig 6 months ago

About the lens cap: I have had the X-E5 with the 23mm 2.8 for about 5 weeks now and I carry it around daily. I’ve noticed the rim of the glass/the edges gets dirtier way easier than with a full coverage cap. So at first i loved the look, but the practicality long term not so much…

I have been using d range priority set to auto on my XT3 for some time and am generally very satisfied. It almost always is equivalent to d range priority weak with ISO set to 320 rather than strong, as reported in the video.

I prefer DR400% and -2 highlights and -2 shadows in high contrast scenes. Result usually looks better.

Brilliant and informative video. Thanks.

I hope you have a good weekend as well! I’m photographing a wedding on Saturday and I’ll try our Dynamic Range Priority (obvs shooting jpeg + RAW). This will be fun!

Questions: I know that Dynamic Range (e.g. 400%) changes the highlight recoverability and overall dynamic range in the RAW files, does Dynamic Range Priority do a similar function? I did see in your video how the RAW files looked different between the two, but that aside, do you know if it (DR-P) changed the overall dynamic range as well in the RAWs?

Thanks! 🧡

The lens cap only covers the middle of the lens, is because it moves in and out; therefore it would break the lens or obviously not fit…. Great video as always! C.
