30 years on, this song STILL gives me chills. That moment when he pauses and opens his eyes is HAUNTING

Been listening to this album for almost 30 years and this song still makes the hair on my neck stand up every time

Thank you SO much for comparing the Leadbelly version. You're the only reactor who I've seen so that. It really gives a sense of the song. That final scream, pause, and breath kills me every time. The pain, and the passion he poured into every song, and every performance was so clear on his face. This whole concert was a masterpiece, and it pissed MTV, and the execs off because they played almost none of their biggest hits, and did 3 covers of little known artists.

Don’t mind me, I’m just here to be called gorgeous

Their Unplugged album showed us how much more Nirvana we would be in store for. To miss out on that was a tragedy second only to his death itself.

I'd forgotten about that one look of Kurt's at the end.  The way you kindly & respectfully touched on it got the tears out.  Wonderful reaction, thank you SO much for covering this one. ❤

Oh gosh, joining the others who have commented with admiration and appreciation for catching that look on Kurt's face just before he delivers the last few words of the song. It's an absolutely haunting moment, especially in reflection. Kurt apparently wanted lilies and black draping fabric for the set, saying he wanted it "like a funeral." To me the look in his eyes is that of a man who has attended his own funeral and is realizing that the ceremony is coming to a close -- or like someone seeing his own ghost.  RIP Kurt.

I've watched dozens of reactions to this song. Somehow you're the first person to comment on his expression at the end. It always mystified me how all these reactors could watch the video and not notice it. It's such a haunting/haunted look.

Thank you for your thoughtful reaction and analysis of this song. So many people didnt "get" what Kurt was doing. They focused on him having "pitch issues" or poor "techniques" or him "hurting his voice". They didnt understand the deliberate and passionate choices he made. It was always about expression, emotion, and saying a big "f- you" to culture, government, peer pressure, perfection, and social norms

It's so cool you brought up the drums. Story goes something like, Kurt was pissed off about how loud Dave was playing and he contemplated doing the set without any drums. In the end, someone went to a local music store and bought brushes, sizzle sticks etc. which Dave hadn't played with but a bunch of the set wasn't played with regular sticks. Dave Grohl has said that they were expecting a bad show because they were all having trouble stripping down to the gentle acoustics with the little rehersal they did.
There's tons of wild stories about these unplugged shows, but they all became iconicn
There's some

The  fairy grunge mother covering "Where did you sleep ..."❤ the idea

Lead Belly really had a very unique singing voice, hence the name, and I feel that Kurt Cobain did him justice with his cover

Pain. That's what this song is.  Pain. And it's the last thing Kurt left us.

This is the tits!  Second time now where you have given my favorite reaction to a song hundreds of people have reviewed. Being able to not only comment on how various aspects of vocal production are created....but then also being able to illustrate it by singing it yourself....is a real gift you are able to share in an unpretentious manner.

Thanks also for the Leadbelly listen and comparison. Really good stuff! ❤

When he opens his eyes to take that breath I feel like he came back to earth, realized what he had just done and then went back to wherever the hell he was to finish what he had started. It's just such an amazing moment to capture on film.

Agreed - when he has that pause and the looks up and opens his eyes - electric.  I remember seeing it when it first played all those years ago and it still hits me every time I see it.

I remember watching this on TV when it first aired. I loved how Nirvana's Unplugged was mostly covers. My favorite is the man who sold the world.

This song has that at home feel in the beginning, a damn good song then feels you never knew you had fr 😢 but it all comes full circle because 3rd person it's a painfully beautiful song that i bet makes everyone shiver.. everytime. I mean every. I love nirvana ❤

The MTV unplugged concerts are the best thing to come from MTV. Its a gift to the world.
And considering what MTV became, and how it just a waste of time now.
Its good to remember they used to give the world things like this.
These bands, and legends. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and so on.
They where given this stage, where some of the most amazing band live recordings ever where made.
All because of MTV, and what they used to be.
They used to be the place where young people could connect with new people. Back when the internet was new, you still bought cd's and listened to music on tv channels.

Also, this song is pretty cool. Because its actually not a Nirvana song, or anyone's song really.
Its a old folk song. dating back to at least the 1800's. And then different people started recording it in the 1900's. Including Leadbelly.
But it also put if not a different meaning, then at least a different context on the song. The lyrics where from a very different time.
The song being about a man, who finds out his wife had been cheating on him, so he walks out into the cold night, and is found dead in the pines.
About why or how he died, is up to how and what you take from the song as a listener.

This was also the last song of the show, as he said.
But MTV wanted Nirvana to go out and give one final number. But they where not sure, because they though they sucked, and it was awful. And that the people hated it, because people where so silent. Later, as the recording became legendary and all that, its clear people where not unhappy.
They where just sucked in. And living in the moment with the music, no mobile phones recording or anything.
Just them, the band and the music.
