In this full-length documentary, Dave Grohl reflects on his time in Nirvana, offering a rare and honest insight into one of the most influential bands of the grunge era. From joining the band as its final drummer to witnessing the meteoric rise of Kurt Cobain, Grohl shares what it was really like inside Nirvana during a period that would change music forever.

He looks back on the early days of the band, the underground punk scene in Seattle, and the moment Nirvana’s sound connected with millions of people around the world. As the band grew from small club shows to global success, the pressures of fame, internal tension, and the weight placed on Cobain began to reshape everything.

Through personal stories and reflections, Grohl reveals the reality behind Nirvana — a band that was not always what people imagined. Moments of chaos, humour, and friendship sat alongside the growing intensity that would eventually lead to the band’s collapse.

He also opens up about the devastating aftermath following Kurt Cobain’s passing, the period of grief and uncertainty that followed, and how he eventually found a way to move forward through music — leading to the creation of the Foo Fighters.

"I was in a band with the greatest songwriter of our generation, and all I had to do was play the drums like it was the last day of my life. So I did."

Dave always did a good job handling Stern and his attempts to get him to talk negatively about nirvana

My sister bought me Nirvana unplugged on cassette tape and wrapped it in toilet paper for my 9th birthday. For some odd reason it’s hands down the most memorable birthday gift I’ve ever received.

I met Dave in the basement bar of a club in NYC. We were there for a Queens of the Stone Age show before they got big. Dave had a cigarette in one hand and a drink in his other. When I went to shake his hand he took the cigarette and put it in his hand with his drink and shook my hand. We talked for a quick minute about QOTSA and someone called him away. My impression of him right away was what a decent guy. A stand-up gentleman. I felt honored to have had a brief interaction with him way back then.

Watching this reminds me of how much I can't stand Howard Stern.

If it wasn't clear, Dave picked up a hitchhiker in Ireland that had a Kurt Cobain t- shirt on . That was his sign to get himself back into music . .

When Kurt’s death was fresh and vultures were circling the crew, Dave threw down. He protected his dead friend and the feelings they all had surrounding it. The wall he and Krist put up in order to heal was the right move.

1:48 like Kurt said, Dave was a well adjusted young man. This picture says “bright kid with a good head on his shoulders.” He appears to handle fame, tragedy and reinvention about as well as any human being could. Kudos

I love Dave. I was at the Curt Memorial in Olympia WA. Candle light. I graduated from Evergreen.His death hit me hard, as well as Layne Staley, years latter. The death of Grunge.

I miss a time that is no longer. Places that dont exist. I hear the echoes of laughter with friends that are not here. GenX.

I've heard these stories a bunch throughout my life but I honestly never get tired of seeing Dave or Krist reflect on Nirvana.

But I'm forever pissed no one has asked for an in depth explanation of the time when Kurt and Dave stayed up all night playing super mario world on snes lmao

"If you're in it you're in it, if you're not, you're out." This was absolute truth.

I cannot stand Howard Stern. His “inter-interrogation-view” skills are horrendous—most overrated personality ever.

I personally think Nirvana would have started making more albums that sounded in the vein of Incesticide and In Utero.

nirvana did release a song dave wrote, marigold

@adampierce7468 1 month ago

They only hired Dave Grohl because he had an awesome set of North drums that hit hard as hell.

24:01 Can you imagine what was going through Taylor's mind when Dave said that? Him being an active substance user, and it leading to his death a few years later. Drugs suck.

@nicolaspaz010 4 months ago

es increible como ya el tipo consagrado con su banda con mas de 20 años aun le sigan preguntando acerca de nirvana. que increible que fue nirvana

I remember finding out in 9th grade in class. We had a tv channel for the students with 15 minutes of news relaxant to teenagers. They showed Kurt Loader announcing Kurts death. I was so distraught i went home.
